Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a New Belgium globe. Best before 8/23/12 etched in glass.
Appearance: Pours a clear light copper color with orange highlights and a 2-3 finger fluffy eggshell white head. Nice head retention and lacing.
Smell: This is one hoppy aroma. Features strong grapefruit and pine notes with touches of sweet citrus and caramel and just a hint of candied malt. Alcohol peeks through just bit.
Taste: Grapefruit and lemon rind up front followed by a touch of malt and sweet citrus in the middle before ending with a blast of resinous pine, a touch of alcohol and more bitter citrus at the finish. Aftertaste is mostly lemon zest and the flavor is long-lasting.
Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with a high amount of prickly carbonation. The hop oils really coat the entire mouth, leaving a film of hops that stays for a while.
Drinkability: Very good drinkability for a beer with an ABV of 10.8%.
Overall: Excellent beer overall. I'm a big fan of Ruination and this one surpasses it in pretty much every way. This is such a contrast to the Pliny the Elder I reviewed yesterday, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Stone clearly set out to wreck the palate and they've accomplished that with their Ruination 10th Anniversary IPA. Highly recommend trying this one. Get it while you can.
