American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.80% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
We first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our belovedly bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as we plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. We packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. The results are glorious, and we know you'll rejoice in tasting this audacious gem of hoppy splendor once again. You're welcome.

Pours a coppery orange with a 2 1/2 finger whitish head that recedes to a film, leaving decent lacing .

HUGE hop presence in the aroma. Smell of floral, grassy hops and almost over ripe citrus, with doughy/yeasty bread,. Herbals represented by pepper and an aroma approaching that of chives. A background of tropical fruits.

The flavor does not disappoint either. Big honey drenched roast malt upfront followed by a kaleidoscope of hop flavors. Ripe sweet citrus, bitter grapefruit rind, and fruity sweet to the point of being almost candy-like. Peppery to the end.

Medium full in body. Deliciously sticky with just the right amount of prickle of carbonation and burn of alcohol.

Superb! A beer for all seasons. Warming and full for the winter. Fruity and floral for the summer.

2014 version bottled 6/19/2014 poured into a Duvel Tulip style glass. Liquid comes out golden amber and with excellent clarity (like many IPAs from Stone). Nice eggshell colored head with mostly small bubbles, nice frothy lacing to it, almost looks like a road map on the upper portion of the glass and there's a ring around the edges on the top and a little island in the middle. Liquid glows when you hold the glass up to the light; a nice overall looking DIPA.

Smells awesome. Initially there's a good helping of generously honey glazed roasted than toasted pale/caramel grains. Multiple different styles of hops detected in the nose, but some of the more mild ones in the nose, you can tell it's not going to be a complete palate wrecker. Starts a little grassy and floral, but plenty of tropical fruits and hints of woody and sappy pine in there. Hints of pepper slightly tickle your ode at the end.

Tastes phenomenal, big flavor all around. Lots of honey roasted sweet toasted grains, almost slightly buiscuty. After that there's an extremely generous amount of hop flavor. Lots of grapefruit, pineapple, mango and some other tropical and citrus flavors. Hints of sticky prickly and sappy pine then there's a slightly spicy hop almost peppery flavor at the end.

Mouthfeel is really good. Big, bold, flavorful, with a full body and a nice long lingering finish. Layers of flavor adding lots of complexity. Well carbonated providing a slightly lighter body to a getting close to heavy beer. Heavily effects both sweet and bitter taste buds. Starts off bold with a sticky sweet start, not completely but fairly smooth with a oily bitter finish. Slight warming effect from the alcohol. Overall and absolutely delicious well rounded full beer. Another home run from Stone. I'm glad it was brewed again, I missed out last year. If this is coming out every summer (which is what I hear), then I will try to seek it out.
