American Double / Imperial IPA |  10.80% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
We first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our belovedly bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as we plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. We packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. The results are glorious, and we know you'll rejoice in tasting this audacious gem of hoppy splendor once again. You're welcome.

Really pretty peach amber color. Extreme clarity for a DIPA. Head looks great at over an inch, although it only took a minute or so to fall to a quarter of its size. Foam almost has a light peach color itself. Looks immensely beautiful.

Great nose! Loads of fresh hops and residual hop oils and pine and citrus pith and hop resin. Smells dank and rich with humulus. There's a squeak of booze in the nose, as well, reminding me that we're almost pushing 11% here. Bitter orange, melon, tangerine, and papaya. As it warms, it picks up more of that leafy green fresh hop aroma.

Crushingly hoppy. Very bitter in the opening, followed by woody pine, mellow grapefruit, orange, light tropical notes, and the swelling intensity of booze. Finishes with more booze, a crash of latent bitterness, and a big beefy caramel malt at a near barleywine magnitude. All the goodness of Ruination and more. Extra burn, extra oiliness, extra pine wallop. That malt is huge, though, but only wants to show up in the finish. Eases the swallow, all the more so. Has a leafiness to it that Ruination doesn't really feature. Spicy with hops. Booze isn't helping that matter.

Besides a wicked booze burn after the sip, body and carbonation works like a great tandem to power through this big drink. A little sticky, but providing some nice girth in the body, otherwise. Effervescence really carries out each mouthful and swallow. Right about how you'd hope a 10.8% IIPA to feel like, minus pipe dreams.

An exercise in futility for the non-hophead. A hop lover's delight. This beer ranks somewhere north of 'Insane'. Besides all that mumbo-jumbo, it's simply a really great beer. Totally satisfying. Leaves absolutely nothing to be desired for the style. It's just mega. You can either handle 'mega' or you can't. Either way, this beer would sit on the shelf another hour or so before being snagged by someone who loves 'mega'.

Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. The Drink By date is mostly rubbed off but I think it reads 08/28/13

A- Pours a rubyish amber color with a 3/4 inch off-white head that retains nicely before slowly shrinking to an 1/8 inch head. Resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind on the glass.

S- Glorious aroma of hops that's so fresh, I feel like I just stuck my nose into a bag of hop pellets. Somehow earthy and citrusy at the same time but intense all around. A bit musty and there's an alcohol fume that's noticeable after a few short sharp sniffs.

T- Bitterness is restrained at first as the grassy, wet hops contribute their complex flavor but then the bite sinks in hard and doesn't let go. The alcohol is remarkably restrained letting the alpha acids strut their stuff without any interference. The malt is there but just merely to keep the hops in check.

M- Very sharp but in the best of ways with a lingering bite. Medium carbonation and a surprisingly hefty body.

O- Even with the high expectations, this is one awesome DIPA. Dangerously drinkable as well. Pretty much everything you could want from the style

A - I've never seen a beer so crystal clear before! It is a beautiful copper/auburn shade that is accompanied by a stream up effervescence that is only reminiscent in a fine champagne like Salón, Cristal, etc. The stream bends with every swirl of the glass. This leaves behind a 1/4" head and lacing that sticks to all sides of the glass.

S - The aroma displays a lot of resin and pine. It is almost, in essence, the smell of tree sap. It is not as citrus forward as "Enjoy By". This one is a lot more concentrated. There is a hint of alcohol, but its very suppressed. Maybe a touch of grapefruit, but more of the initial aromas standout.

T - This is a very well-balanced beer. It's flavors are exactly as it smells, but with a malt-like backbone. The hops create a bitterness on the back of the tongue that leaves you just short of shivering. Perfect for me!

M - Medium astringency and carbonation are the first two things I notice about the mouthfeel. It supplies an oily coating to the palate and a finish that continually lingers for upwards of a minute. It's hard not to love this brew.

O - Stone knocked it out of the park! This is a completely different monster than the "Enjoy By". Don't expect a ton of fruit. But if you are looking for a malt-driven, pine-like, hoppy DIPA, look no further....RuinTen is here!

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Clear. Small white head. Just some wisps on the surface.

Smell - Boozy, wow. Aggressive grapefruit and pine hop. Not a distinct hop profile, but nice. The malt profile is strong, but booze is more prominent.

Taste - Still really boozy. Grapefruit and some brighter citrus. Caramel malt is accentuated more than the sugars, although it retains some sweetness. A lot of booze, though. Aggressive bittering hops that build with each sip. Really boozy finish.

Mouthfeel - Heavier than your average double IPA. Excessively boozy.

Overall - I definitely enjoy regular Ruination over this. Rough alcohol and not enough of a hop profile to justify it.

Poured from a 22 oz brown bomber into a clear glass snifter. Just purchased on release day in VA. Purchased at Beer Run (Charlottesville, VA) for $7.99.

A: Clear golden-amber with frothy 2-finger off-white meringue like head with decent retention and tons of lacing.

S: Aromas are very citrusy, don't get me wrong, but there are an inordinate amount of herbal, almost minty aromas as well as a lot of melon in there too. Malt stays in the background. I didn't pick up a lot of onion aromas, but more shooty/vegetal than I can remember from any previous Stone beer.

T: The minty nature of the hops, most evident on the finish, and the estery, floral, honeydew melon flavor are an interesting combination. There is more grapefruit in the citrus department. There is also no shortage of dank, earthy qualities there too. The slightly bitter booziness is a drawback in my opinion -- maybe I'm not worthy but a 9.5%ABV version of this would have been better.

M: Pretty darn dry but the booziness hurts in this department, maybe allowing a little astringent quality to creep in. Body is medium at most.

O: A good beer, but give me Enjoy By anyday. This beer just needs some of the alcoholic tendencies honed down and this good beer could be a great beer. Nothing bad about it and interesting no doubt.

Poured Ruinten into a Belgian Tulip.

A - The liquid pours amber color with a full two fingers of creamy white head.

S - Getting hop resin right off the bat, grapefruit, pine, hops more hops. Stuff smells really good here.

T - Ok now, this may be the best IPA I have had to date. This thing is very hoppy but so smooth crisp and refreshing, smooth malt balance it out nicely. It has a lot of pine, grapefruit, fresh hops. It has everything you want in a premium IPA. Quality stuff here my friend.

M - Perfect mouthfeel for this brew. Medium carbonation, silky smooth, maybe slight chewy. Awesome mouthfeel. Love the stuff. It has some body to it.

O - Very nice beer. If your into Imperial IPA's please grab a few of these you won't be disappointed. Highly Recommended! Cheers!!

Bottle purchased at the Bushnell's Basin Hess.

Pours a murky bright golden orange, with a one inch foamy head, and good lacing down the glass.

Smells like rubbing alcohol, sugary malts, and searing pine hops.

This is one of the hoppiest beers I've ever had, it doesn't mess around. But, to its detriment, it's also super sugary and boozy, making it quite hard to drink. Some lemon pledge and weed-covered pine needle tastes berate the tongue, with a ton of stinging booze. Some sweet almost barleywine like malt flavors as well, plus a shredding bitterness near the end of each sip. There's some weird earthy flavors too that are reminiscent of onion. This is an extreme beer, and tastes relatively good for about 5-6 oz, then gets to be way too much.

Medium bodied, sticky sweet mouthfeel, low carbonation. Very present alcohol.

This one is for people who need their palates to be annihilated. It's one of the strongest, booziest, hoppiest IPAs I've ever had.

a) little head, with little retention, small amount of lacing. clear orangey amber in color with light carbonation.

s) resinous hops with some sweetness, hints of citrus and florals.

t) intense resinous hops, but hides the 10.8% alcohol pretty well. well balanced flavors.

m) still intense but surprisingly light in the mouth, thin and smooth overall with a coarse hops bite up front.

o) good, flavorful, and surprisingly easy to drink for being strong. i want to enjoy every sip.

#300

P: Crystal clear body with a silky white top.

S: Juicy tropical fruit bouquet that is encased in lime leaves. Pineapple, melon, grapefruit, and floral hops.

T/M: Succulent juicy tropical fruits, toasted sesame seeds, oak funk, old leather, spiced rum and herbs. Spicy medium mouthfeel that bites back.

O: Huge tropical hops and toasty malts. What's not to love. This is by far one of the best impy's I've had. Succulent and smooth. Great way to celebrate a anniversary. Cheers!

DRINK BY 09/12/13

A: Pours a copper/amber color with 2 fingers of head that slowly creeps down to a thin cap

S: Pretty hoppy, with some nice pine, citrus, and earthy notes. Some light maltiness behind that

T: Holy hops. Starts off very hoppy and just keeps it up. Piney, citrusy goodness with barely a semblance of malt to back up the hops. Bitter throughout and into the finish. Alcohol is very well hidden

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Fairly oily and slick

O: Now this is a hop bomb if I've ever seen/drank one. The malts provide barely enough backing, but the point of the beer was to be a hop monster, which it is. Impressively drinkable for nearly 11% and being so damn hoppy. Decent price-point at under $8 for a bomber. I'm glad this will be an annual release now. This will definitely cure any insatiable thirst for hops
