500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2009 Double Bastard aged in Bourbon Barrels. Reviewed from notes.
Appearance - Deep amber with an off-white head and nice surface bubbles.
Smell - Incredible bourbon and oak barrel notes. No booze, but also not much of the base beer on the nose.
Taste - Bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Caramel malt. Still has quite the hop presence of Double Bastard. Bitter and oaky finish.
Mouthfeel - Not boozy. Not very thick, either. Oak and hops make the finish a little harsh.
Overall - Loads of vanilla. Excellent barrel flavors. I never would have thought the base beer a good candidate for barreling, but this worked out nicely.

Reviewing the Bourbon Barrel Aged 2009 Double Bastard Ale from the Quingenti Millitre Series from Stone Brewing Company out of Escondido, California.
Bottle is from the June 2012 release. Served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 01/31/13.
Appearance: Chestnut brown in color with a finger of fizzy beige head that gradually settles to a thin layer atop the glass. Has a very traditional old ale look, but with a lot more head than expected off the pour. Good lacing and retention. Some serious floaties settle onto the bottom half of the glass. 3/5
Smell: Caramel, molasses, fig, sweet raisin, and sweet, faintly desserty, oaky vanilla. Lots of malt with a dark fruit twist. Bourbon complexities are very noticeable on the nose. Faint milk chocolate in the background. Some “leather belt” smell towards the end of a whiff too. Light alcohol esters present. There is a little brown sugar and a “fizziness” in the nose as the beer warms up. 4.25/5
Taste: Lots of caramel, then lesser quantums of brown sugar and fizzy vanilla. Finish is oddly bitter. There is some dark fruit too. 3.5/5
Mouthfeel: Too thin and over-carbonated. Dry, and slightly bitter on finish. 1.5/5
Overall: Although the nose was promising, the favors are too light, less complex and the mouthfeel kills the beer. Skip this one.
Cost: $20 for a 500 ml bottle.

2010 version on-tap at Stone in Escondido. Reviewed from notes taken last week.
A- Amber bodied pour into 8oz tasting mini-pint glass. Small white head forms but falls fairly quickly to a thin ring around the edges of the beer. Just a few spots of lace.
S- Aged Double Bastard comes through nicely, having had it many times, with dusty musty caramel and spiced raisins, it feels more like an Old Ale now, a good one however. The barrel contributes hints of faint vanilla bourbon and some oak wood.
T- Mimics the aroma closely but more of the barrel coming through here. Dusty aged caramel and raisin oxidation with some sweetness complimented by a medium-strength bourbon barrel. At this point a great vanilla flavor comes through with a fresh oak woody feel and some whiskey in the end.
MF- Moderately heavy body with a medium level of carbonation and a nice creamy texture. Some warmth from the alcohol but it works well here.
Aged Double Bastard and the right kind of Bourbon barrel usage come together here to create something special. The flavors from each are complimentary and this is one I could sip on for hours.

2010 edition (edition might not be the right word here, but hey, what can I do?)
Served on tap to a 10/12 oz cup, nothing special (except the beer).
All that I do not like in Double Bastard is gone here, and what I like in Double Bastard is still here, multiplied.
A: Dark brown/redish, cloudy, with a thin head that dissipates quickly leaving almost no lacing.
S: malt, malt, malt, sweet awesome malty beer. Vanilla, bourbon, dark fruit, more malt, more booze, sweet goodness. Some hops somewhere, paying a lot of attention. Those super obvious hops in double bastard are almost gone here.
T: slight bitterness from the almost disappeared hops up front, and then it hits you all at once. Similar to the aroma. Tons of malt, vanilla, bourbon, fruits, sweetness, dark sugars, back to vanilla. Super complex beer. Amazing!
M: thick as expected, low carbonation, full body. Feels good and warm in the mouth.
I'm so looking forward to going to San Diego and our reservation in the Stone Bistro next weekend!
