Pours clear dark gold/amber with a big off-white head. Good lacing and retention.
Interesting aromas. Typical tropical fruit with a touch of citrus, but the rye spice does make an appearance and in what I'm coming to associate the Calypso hop with, a huge lemon presence overwhelms. Smells a bit like lemon pledge.
Strong pine with a hefty caramel backbone greets the front of the palate. A little rye spiciness, but it's a bit more subdued than the nose. Finishes resiny and dry with an intense lemon character. Almost smells like lemon you find in saisons at times and with the rye it takes on an almost Belgian quality at times. The spicy rye and booze come out more as it warms making it harsh and unpleasant. Flavors really clash.
Medium mouthfeel. Good carbonation. As with most DIPA's of this range, it's a bit past the sweet spot and the alcohol isn't hidden well. Gets too boozy as it warms. I like my booze in stouts, not so much in IPA's.
The weakest anniversary beer in a few years. Might have been ok if I split it, but the flavors don't lend to great drinkability and I didn't like the additives. They took away from the base flavor and added nothing pleasant.

08/22/12 On tap. To me most IPAs are too aggressive. This an exception. It's well balanced as to it's bitterness & the respectable hoppyness. It got a kick with a little burn. Appears to be brewed with me in mind and not the brewers bragging rights. Sue me, but I'll say it anyway...it's got great grownup characteristics.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label lists the abv at 10 % and there is a nice discretion of the beer.
Appearance: The beer has a deep honey amber color with a slight haze. It builds a tall just off white head on top which hangs on well and clings to the glass making lots of cool lacing.
Smell: The aroma is full of loads of bright lemony citrus and well...hops. (Classic Stone IPA)
Taste / Palate: The flavor is full of hops from start to finish. First up are the citrus and tropical notes with a spicy malty bready base. This fades into herbal and pine like hop notes with slow fading bitterness in the finish.
Notes: Hang on to the hops roller coaster its going to be a bitter good ride.
