Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

We've been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it's all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We're talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a Double IPA (can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

I previously had this on tap and this really isn't very similar. The draft version is very lemony but this has just a hint.

As I drink more, the nose comes out a bit, but still it is way down but on tap it was in your face (and nice). This is a nicely balanced strong IPA where the alcohol is pretty well covered by lots of hops. It looks nice in the glass - a bit dark and foamy. The nose in my snifter keeps getting better. I am having it slightly warm.

This is definitely a cool bomber to share and I would buy it again.

A: Dark golden, copperish, with a slightly tan head.

S: Hopped to high hell, mostly floral, but some orange citrus as well.

T: Extremely hop forward flavors, citric and floral, as if made of hops that were pulverized to liquid form.

M: Medium bodied, perfect amount of carbonation.

O: Not the best stone beer, but better than many of their standards.

Stone Brewery 16 Anniversary is an Imperial IPA with a 10% ABV~ Pours Transparent ruby/orange, lots of head with phenomenal lacing~ Aroma is Lemon Rind, Plastic, Grapefruit, Bread, Earthiness,Yeast and Honey~ Mouthful is bitter immediately, flat finish, Heavy yet juicy and Clean~ Taste is Lemon, Grapefruit, Rye, Wheat, Woody, Piney, Grassy, Floral, Hoppy, Biscuit, and some tastes I'm unfamiliar with( think Juniper? Clove? Lemon Grass?)~ Really such an odd brew, seems like every other sip is different, which speaks volumes for its complexity~ Yet is tuff to review, one sip I'm like 'ewww' ~The next I'm like 'Oh yeah' I could definitely put a few back on a hot summers day~ The thought that they clock in at 10% is near mind blowing!~ I have a feeling people will either love or hate this beer~ The more I drink it... The more it wrecks my palate... Also the more I enjoy it~ It's equal parts odd, yet refreshing~ A anniversary treat, that would make a great summer brew~ Overall: 88

Bomber > Pint Glass

A - Mostly clear orange gold with a finger of thick fluffy off white head, medium lacing.
S - Nice lemon zest, caramel malt, a little bit of alcohol, some really sour smelling citrus, lime especially, pine.
T - At this point its mostly caramel malt, there's some of that lemon flavor still there, a little herbal, some spicy hop bite mid end, pine, and some grapefruit.
M - Sticky with a moderate burn.
O - Granted this is a year and a half old it was pretty decent, I would have like to have had it fresh, not sure how I missed out on it when it came out, but I love lemon flavored anything for the most part.
