Drank from a 1pt.6fl.oz. bottle purchased at Craft Beer Cellar, Belmont, MA
Third batch - 12.21.12
Bottled on 11.16.12
Served in a snifter
The liquid poured an exceedingly crystal clear, orangey-amber color and was topped by a small, bubbly, frothy, bright white head. I cannot remember the last time I saw a beer of this style so thoroughly filtered. The head quickly dissipated to a thin film. Drippy blocks of lacing trickled down the glass.
The aroma was simply one of the best I have ever encountered in a double IPA. Super pungent, dank and resiny. Off the hook weed-like. Bright and floral. Fruity and semi-sweet. Lots of overripe nectaries, peaches and mango. This was truly a joy to smell.
The flavor profile was outstanding as well. It was super hoppy but lacked the bitterness and astringency found in similar examples. Amazingly well balanced. A touch of bready, pale malts appeared on the front end. Intense tropical fruit notes later took over. Peaches, nectaries and pineapple came through strong. Candied orange peel was also noticeable. The finish was crisp and only moderately bitter with notes of grapefruit rind. For a 9.6% ABV beer, the alcohol was exceptionally well hidden.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied for the style. A touch thinner then expected. The liquid contained a fine, zippy, tongue blanketing effervescence.
Stone's IPAs can be a bit too dry, pithy and bitter for my palate, but this beer was amazingly well balanced and ridiculously drinkable. All in all, Enjoy By IPA was one of the best double IPAs I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. This beer is so dank, hoppy and fruity that it left me begging for more. I would love to see Stone transition this into a regular offering.
