Enjoyed out of the classic brown bottle with an enjoy by date that also doubles as the enormous silkscreened label. This is from the 12.13.13 batch. Poured into a Belgian tulip glass because that's all I have clean.
Appearance - Body is a crystal clear orange with tones of honey and and brass colors as well. Atop the body sits a moderate head the color of off-white, about two fingers thick. Dissipates over several minutes, leaving a film across the body with a rim of thicker bubbles around the edges of the glass. As I drink it down, there are noticeable rings of lace at each place where the liquid remained while I paused between drinks.
Smell - Pine, some faint grapefruit, and herbal notes, including green onions--the tips, aka chives--and grass. Mostly herbal/vegetal rather than fruity/floral. I also get some esters from the high level of booze, but they aren't overpowering.
Taste - Very much expected based on the smell. Here, the grapefruit is a bit more present up front, along with some lemon zest, which slowly evolves into a more complex flavor with the essence of green onion and fresh-cut grass. The esters are a little more aggressive here, but honestly blend into the overall flavor quite well. Surprisingly drinkable for a 9.4% beer.
Mouthfeel - Moderate carbonation and medium-to-light body, with some element of viscosity lending a slight chewiness to the beer. Dry finish.
Overall, a stellar beer. I've had several different batches (7.4.13, 9.13.13, 10.25.13 and now 12.13.13) and I must admit it's hard to resist the temptation to buy a new bottle from each release. A quality double IPA that certainly stands up to the marketing efforts that surround it. One of my favorites from Stone.
