You have in your hands a devastatingly fresh double IPA. While freshness is a key component of many beers - especially big, citrusy, floral IPAs - we've taken it further, a lot further, in this IPA. You see, we specifically brewed it NOT to last. We've not only gone to extensive lengths to ensure that you're getting this beer in your hands within an extraordinarily short window, we made sure that the Enjoy By date isn't randomly etched in tiny text somewhere on the label, to be overlooked by all but the most attentive of retailers and consumers. Instead, we've sent a clear message with the name of the beer itself that there is no better time than right now to enjoy this IPA.

Fourth batch - 02.15.13 bottle poured into a tulip

I had this on tap at Churchkey and had to pick up a few bombers at Whole Foods.

A-Deep golden amber with a half finger of off white head

S-Strong hops, pine, malt, citrus and tropical fruits, floral notes

T-Fresh hop taste, strong but not overwhelming with a background of citrus and a light malty finish

M-Smooth with a medium body and light carbonation

O-Delicious hoppy beer. I love Stone brews and I think this is my favorite yet. It's really fresh and hoppy with a good balance between the bitter, citrus and malt.

I poured this into a ipa glass, it has a golden color body with a small sticky head. The aroma has a pine and citrus coming from it. The taste has a bitter hop of pine up that's hits the tongue. I get a little citrus also. The mouthfeel is sticky and leaves a sticky hop taste on the tongue. Overall this is excellent dipa.

Enjoyed 9 days after being bottled. Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Dogfish Head oversized snifter.

Alloy orange to amber gradient, day-bright and topped with a magnolia collar surrounding an archipelago-like surface slick. Fine sandy lacing, moderately sticky yet fast running legs. Decent retention.

The profusion of hops utilized is immediately apparent in the nose, a frontal assault that begins the moment you pop the cap and becomes a nearly overwhelming wave of tropical fruit, citrus, and fresh herbs when poured into the glass. The individual notes are name-able (passion fruit, lemongrass, orange marmalade, garlic chives...the list goes on for ages), but are insufficient in themselves to convey the impression that the full olfactory constellation has upon your senses. The intimidating list of hops in the kettle is such a melange that I was fearing an unworkable muddle, but the cohesion is remarkable. Nearly stunning.

The herbaceous and spicy hop notes are surprisingly to the front of the palate - much more so than all the fruit from the nose would lead you to expect. The peppery bitterness melds with a potent malt backbone, though without too much specialty character to get in the way of the hops. Potent bitterness gives way to an equally potent burst of fruit fading to an earthy acidity in the finish. While not exactly fulfilling the promise of the nose - the flavors serve as a great foil to your expectations.

Medium mouthfeel - faintly oily yet a touch prickly at the same time. Precisely calibrated to deliver the maximum flavor without sacrificing refreshment.

As I brew more from home, I buy less and less beer - and appreciate more those beers that I am unlikely to be able to reproduce. The complexity and expense of the recipe used to create this ale, along with the assuredness of craft on display make me willing to part with $8 for a bomber without complaint. Far superior to Double Bastard in my opinion - one of Stone's best efforts to date - a pure and uncompromising example, in rare company in the style.

Bottle into over-sized wine glass.

A - Medium density, 2-finger, light-cream head. Dissipates to be fairly loose and frothy. Moderate lacing. Light to medium amber in color. Quite spectacular, rather intense and seems to almost glow. Almost totally opaque. There is an interesting 'snap' to the carbonation on finishing the pour.

S - A deeper, darker, pine resin, alcohol, "dankness", tropical florals. Surprisingly little citrus for style.

T - Astringent bitter pine. Very little citrus if any. Not complex, but delivers as promised. Very much following smell.

M - Rather abrasive overall generally due to bitterness. Slightly warming, alcohol-type aftertaste. Otherwise smooth, nothing glaring to point out; which is to say its balanced to the point of not noticing it (beyond being a palate-wrecker).

O - "Devastatingly Dank". Yes. Basically delivers on what is expected, and does so very well. I feel it is more hop-focused/forward/centric than other DIPAs, much to its own benefit.
