You have in your hands a devastatingly fresh double IPA. While freshness is a key component of many beers - especially big, citrusy, floral IPAs - we've taken it further, a lot further, in this IPA. You see, we specifically brewed it NOT to last. We've not only gone to extensive lengths to ensure that you're getting this beer in your hands within an extraordinarily short window, we made sure that the Enjoy By date isn't randomly etched in tiny text somewhere on the label, to be overlooked by all but the most attentive of retailers and consumers. Instead, we've sent a clear message with the name of the beer itself that there is no better time than right now to enjoy this IPA.

Review of the 4-20-14 Batch:
From the bomber into a standard pint glass results in a very bright, clear golden body capped by a one inch head that slowly falls into a very determined cap of foam with sticky lace all over.
Aroma is pungent pine resin, marijuana, fresh cut grass, not overpowering but substantial.
Taste is upfront hop bitter with a pronounced malt sweetness for balance, but here is where I get off this train, there is a very strong medicinal alcohol flavor that for me is distracting.
On the juicy side. More of a sipper than a refreshing drink
One and done for me, I prefer my DIPAs to hide the alcohol better, Pliny the Elder, Lagunitas Sucks and Boneyard Hop Venom do it better. All that said It's a very good beer and if the other ones are not available I'd never turn this down

Found at the local bottle shop. Happy that it showed up.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip glass. Pours a white 1.5 finger head that leaves some decent lacing. Hazy, ruddy, straw color.

S: Great nose on this beer. Flowery and grassy notes right away that fade into strong pine and grapefruit aromas.

T: Very balanced for the amount of hops in the nose. It starts off with flowery/pollen flavors that follow up with a toasty, bready, even biscuity. Ends with a moderate hop bite that sits on the back of the tongue. Really hides the alcohol as it only really shows up as a slight sweetness throughout.

M: Medium heavy mouth feel. Really sits in your mouth, but not in a bad way. Easy to sip or quaff if you feel like it (though I wouldn't recommend it).

O: Really great DIPA. I can't find much of a flaw with it at all. If it was around all the time it would be a regular in my lineup. Highly recommended if you can find it. Stone does another great highly hopped beer.

Enjoy By 04/20/2014

A: Tangerine.

S: Pine, marijuana, apricot, and jasmine.

T: A wave of aggressive bitterness that we've all come to expect from Stone. After that comes a heavy dose of sweetness, tropical fruit, and flowers. It tastes thick and pungent, like nectar. Mangoes and jasmine. It's almost overwhelming. Then the bitterness and astringency returns to leave you yearning for another sip.

M: From nectar to a drying finish.

O: Solid. I had prepared myself to be disappointed given the hype but this is definitely worthy of the praise.

I have had this previously. Written this full review based on 4-20-14 version.

A - Copper orange clear pour with a frisky white heady that forms and fades fairly quickly, leaving behind extensive lacing.

S - Full frontal hops here. Smacks the nose up with a big resin core, pine front with citrus hints, but with danker notes, too. The fruit has been more forward in previous versions. Not surprising, given the hop explosion, a few of the darker elements of a hop bomb float up, too (cat urine, I'm looking at you), but well in control, and always second to the fruit and pine.

T - Where the smell leads, but without all the random hop cacophony. The taste is controlled with its explosive power. This hop bomb pulls no punch, offers no quarter. It is bitter and proud. But the pine, hop resin, and grapefruit pith are all tied to a fine malt backbone that levels things out and allows the explosion to go off without wrecking things. A nice trick. Bright notes come to a sweeter middle mark as the malt comes in with its cracker and sugar notes, closing with a wicked hook back to hop bitterness, which builds but does not crush the palate.

M - Crisp, moderate carbonation, but with some drying that builds as you drink. Still, given the nature of the brew, this is a very easy beer to drink. Dropping nearly 10% ABV in the process, the alcohol is essentially hidden until you feel it.

O - When I picked up this offering for the first time, I'd never had a true blue IPA or DIPA. This opened my eyes, and so wins major points for its role. But the beer holds up to the high initial rating I gave it because it delivers on its promise. A big, bold hop celebration, to be drunk quickly but not forgotten. Well worth the price.

Tasted On: 03-28-2014
Freshness: Enjoy by 04-20-2014
Packaging: 22 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Tulip
Purchased: Single from Frugal MacDoogal, Nashville

A: Beer is a dark copper color, semi-clear. The off-white head has good retention and lacing.

S: Aromas are of citrus and piney hops, with grapefruit and also a green onion smell.

T: The taste features a big hoppy bitterness, very resinous and somewhat astringent. The green onion I noticed in the aroma is also present in the flavors.

M: Chewy mouthfeel with a high carbonation level. The finish is bitter and astringent.

O: Overall a good DIPA but seemed one dimensional with little malt presence. Also the green onion seemed like an off-flavor.
