12oz bottle poured into an Old Guardian glass.
A - Pours a deep black color, almost totally opaque, with a 2 finger cap of fluffy cappuccino colored foam. Head shows good staying power, managing to hang around for a couple of minutes before dissipating and leaving behind foamy lacing on the glass.
S - Lots of chocolate up front with a combination of dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Mint is there, but takes a bit of a back seat to the chocolate aromas. Also can find some dark roastiness, perhaps a bit of molasses and some licorice.
T - Mint really comes out in the flavor...cool, clean, a bit sweet. A burnt, black malt acrid bitterness plays off the mint up front. This is followed by a smoother, chocolate rich backing of cocoa and 70% cacao. Hops are not noticeable on the palette, nor are they necessary to enhance what is already there. Finish returns to a bit of a charcoaly acrid acidity which could be a bit smoother.
M - Medium full body...carbonation is light, hardly noticeable and just about perfect for this beer. Sharply bitter, acrid, burnt, charcoaly but layered with chocolate and softly minty. Smooth and a bit oily on the tongue...rich and worthy of dessert.
O - Quite interesting beer. Solid as an ashy imperial stout at the base with the additional complexity and dessert-like aspects of chocolate and mint that pair together so well. Personally, I would think mint would go better with a standard strength stout with an even heavier body, a bit less char, and more sweetness to play off of the mint more. Very good, but having brewed my own mint stout a couple of times, I have some built in biases and preferences coming into it.

12oz bottle into a mini snifter.
pours a dark black with a slight head. smell is huge huge on mint chocolate...perfect! just as you'd expect. the taste is a big mouthful of mint chocolate at first but it ends very bitterly. drinkabilty is moderate...medium bodied with mild to low carbonation.
overall good niche beer. try it!
