From 11/17/12 notes. Big thanks to yourefragile for sharing this one; never heard of it but always interested in a new Stone beer. Poured into a mini-snifter.

a - Pours a pitch black color with a bew dark tan bubbles and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells strongly of bourbon, some chocolate, some roasted malts,, light coffee, and burnt malts, Bourbon is strong but I like it.

t - Tastes of strong bourbon, dark fruits, roasted malts, chocolate, burnt malts, and something kind of weird/off. Sweet and alcohol-y, a big step down from the nose for me.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Some definite alcohol heat.

o - Overall a decent BA porter, though it is very strong and the bourbon dominates. Taste seemed a little weird, but I liked the nose. Interesting and glad to try it, though probably wouldn't look for it again.

Enjoyed in a tulip at Flanny's. Poured into a tulip.

Deep black, moderately thick. The thin tan head becomes a little ring. Some reaching strands.

Mostly bourbon in the nose. Lots of brown sugar, lots of ethanol. A little oak, hints of vanilla and smoke.

Again, more bourbon than anything else. Maple, chocolate, oak, vanilla. Tons of booze. There should be more smoke.

Medium body, mild tingly carbonation. Big tongue-numbing alcohol.

Too much booze. Wish there was more of the base beer.

Growler shared by yourefragile, I love a good Stone tick. Beer is dark brown with almost no head, clear at the corners, no lacing, low carbonation.

Aroma is sweet with just bourbon in there.

Beer tastes like watered down bourbon, not much else breaking through, pretty heavy beer overall. It is decent but not great, I'd try it again if it were on draft but I don't think that will happen. Oh well.

Growler shared by yourefragile. Thanks Michael.

The beer appears a cola brown color with virtually no head or lacing. Perhaps the growler format contributed to this? The aroma offers bourbon, roast, malt (slightly charred), smoke, oak. The aroma is superior to the flavor. A bit thin and even perhaps watery, with roast and smoke. Bourbon and barrel character is prominent throughout. Overall, this was decent.

Pours a dark cola brown with a bubbly light tan head. Nose of bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit, light oak, smoke and roast. Flavor of cherry, plum, bourbon, marshmallow, caramel, and oak; barrel aging dominates most traces of the porter other than the ashy and smoky finish. Slightly thin body for style, moderate carbonation. An enjoyable boozy and hot bourbon sipper.

I was able to have a couple of snifters of this BBA Porter on-tap during a Stone Tap Takeover event at Hangar 9 in Carbondale, Illinois. In reviewing this beer, I have a bit of trouble solidly assigning numbers as information concerning what this beer is "supposed to be" are a bit vague. In talking with one of the brewers from Stone at the event I was told that this beer was an American Porter aged in bourbon barrels for two years and that the ABV was somewhere in the 8-9% range. A big Porter, such as this, kind of borders on stout for me and then throw it in bourbon barrels for two years and the subtleties die out even more. What I was left with was an impression of a pretty yummy sipper with its strengths heavily weighted in simplicity.

Suitable is an inky black abyss that hits you in the nose with all oak and bourbon. A light skimming in the corner of khaki froth aside, there is no real discernible head. Suitable, reminiscent of BCBS, comes in all sweet dark malt and bourbon and doesn't leave you with much else. It's enjoyable in the same way that sipping a small batch of whiskey around a fireplace would be. One would do best to check any ideas of American Porter at the door as this comes through more as a heavily bourbon aged stout with no hop flavor profile and low bitterness. Across the board, I've decided to somewhat hastily give Suitable 4.0s except in the arena of mouthfeel. If you look like a BBA stout, smell like a BBA stout and taste like a BBA stout then I kind of expect you to play and feel like a BBA stout. Maybe I'm in the wrong here, but this does come off a little light and watery when I let my expectations get the best of me.

All in all, I'll say it again. This is a yummy BBA treat. One would do well do sip one with a friend and share a deep intellectual conversation, stories of heroic deeds of past ages or create epic tales in bard style. Suitable is definitely worth a tasting at the very least.

1638th Review on BA
Growler to Goblet

Thanks to Crystal for sharing, Shared with Steve and Mike and Brian

App- More along the lines of a small black color. A bit brown around the edges and fairly dense. A bit see through around the edges. The head was a nice bit of light tan and fairly bubbly. Small cling and lace. Looked good.

Smell- A bit grainular with a rough bit of booze. Once it warmed a bit more, it became a bit nicer with a lot of the base malts coming out with some sugars and some dark chocolates as well. The barrel come out a little bit more with a bit of char, oak and grain behind it.

Taste- This was a nice porter with some very good barrel character. A bit grainy for me with a slightly off earthiness and nuttiess. Semi- balanced but still better than most BA Porters. (Shipwreck excluded). A nice bit of chocolate and malts as well.

Mouth- A full medium body with a medium dense carbonation. Fairly rich and decadent with a solidness behind it. The residual flavors are that of chocolate and a little booze behind it.

Drink- A nice BA porter. Stone needs to bottle this. Like soon!
