Realized after buying it that it was over 2 months past the printed freshness date. Bought in an individual 12 oz. bottle from the local BevMo. Next time I'll try a fresher bottle...
To begin with, I am not a fan of American hops. No, I'm not a communist, I just can't handle more than a couple per week. There's just something about the overpowering pine/citrus/floral character that rubs me the wrong way. I was pleasantly surprised to find that little to none of that was to be found in Stone Pale Ale. What a relief!
Poured with a small, quickly dissipating head into a Duvel tulip glass. The initial lacing stuck around indefinitely, but that's it. Glass was clean, but the freshness may have affected the head..
Aroma was sweet, like peaches. I could smell the Crystal malt. No noticeable hop aroma (to me) which isn't a bad thing. I'm no hop head, after all.
Taste was wonderfully bitter without being overpowering, sweet and malty but not *too* sweet. I felt it was very balanced. The flavor was subtly complex - enough so that I could tell it was there, but my palette just isn't sensitive enough to get any more specific (or I'm not pretentious enough...). Definitely some sweet caramel and fruit flavors, and the slightly citrus hop flavors finally show up on the finish. Five minutes after finishing my glass, I felt like I'd just had a glass of grapefruit juice, but didn't notice it *while* I was drinking.
Very drinkable, though the ABV is high enough that I wouldn't be able to handle too many of these without a break.
Overall, strongly reminded me some of the lighter, more bitter American Ambers I've had (particularly Red Tail), though it had a bit more complexity of flavor. Also, it was extremely similar to Stone's Levitation, which I had just yesterday. In fact, the only difference I could reliably detect as a noob is that the Levitation had lower ABV and less citrus/grapefruit in the finish.
Definitely wouldn't mind having this again, maybe fresher and in a 6-pack. One of my new favorites!

Poured into a tulip glass. Had a nice golden brown color with a fluffy white head.
The smell was of roasted malts with a faint bit of citrus. Expected a little hop but there wasn't much there.
Heavy malt taste in the beginning. Sweet with a slight hint of orange. Slightly bitter finish.
Nice drinkable pale ale. Crisp and refreshing.
