APPEARANCE: The Perfect Crime is a deep, dark reddish-brown. It looks like a lot like a Porter with it's light brown head that slips away within a minute or two of the pour. The lacing is thin, but gets good coverage.

SMELL: Oddly enough, mint is the first thing that stands out to me in the nose here. And no, I did not just finish up a glass of Mint Stout. The mint isn't the most dominant smell, but aside from your other typical Saison smells; citrus, earthy hops and a little grass, that is what seems to set this apart from other Saisons.

TASTE: Wow, this is a grassy beer. Funky too. Funky and grassy. Some roasted malty flavors dance around with orange and other citrus flavors and they become more apparent with some warmth. The citrus becomes more pronounced towards the back end as the finish tastes strongly like bitter grapefruit. The backbone, however, is still the grass.

MOUTHFEEL: Given the color, this is a relatively light-bodied beer. The carbonation is also strong, providing a cleansing feel and it is very dry. Quite nice in this department.

OVERALL: Obviously this is not your typical Saison, but many characteristics of a farmhouse ale come through, particularly the fruity funkiness. The twist here is with the roasted malt and the more intense grapefruity bitterness (and maybe the mint?) This is a nice change of pace from the run-of-the-mill Saison.

The beer pours out in a light black color.

The aroma has roasted malt, a light herbal and spicy quality, a light breadiness.

On the flavor, the beer in the front has a porter like roasted malt and coffee. There's a spicy black pepper that combines well with the medium minus smoke and bacon quality. A hint of fruity esters. The finish is even more bacon, spice, herbal hops.

The decent brew with good qualities, but lacking in excitement.

Color- thick espresso. Full coffee foam head.

Aroma- hoppy and spiced with hint of roastiness.

Taste- An odd bird of a brew. Starts smokey with active carbonation, slightly bitter and roasty, finishing with a lingering rich roast and hops. Described as a black smoked saison. A Stone collaboration.

Poured from 650 ml bomber into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted 7/7/2013

(bottle from 2012 - stored in a room temp environment, out of light - poured into a balloon)

A: somewhat impenetrably dark brown liquid, rather clear pouring from the bottle... tall tan-colored foam, rather compact for the most part, notable portion of islands of larger bubbles - possible sediment corruption... little lacing

S: toffee, touch of coffee grounds, and a rather pungent piney-leafy greenness... mildly smoky semi-dark cocoa, hints of black pepper and licorice perhaps... smells very much like a hoppy west coast stout - too much dark malt presence to be mistaken for a "saison", though it's nuance is there

T: a lot of the complex spiciness you'd expect from a Dupont, up front, and surprisingly matched/balanced against the bold, rich, smooth, decidedly Baltic porter malt flavors... unmistakably Belgian yeast phenolic character... wisp of smoke and soapy-floral in the aftertaste... rather soft yet supple bitterness reminiscent of a mix of orange-peel and dark chocolate

M: smooth and fullish like an Imperial Stout, coating the palate on pass-by with a coffee and creme type of texture... finishes quiet and dry, mellow warmth, if any... residual dark sugar and hop resins stick behind

O: don't know what this was like relatively fresh, but it's not too shabby in its current state... perhaps it's mellowed a bit on the spiciness, who knows?... still has a lot of flavor to offer, might just develop even more with age
