A- pours black, but not quite opaque, khaki foamy and sudsy head that reduces to a small bubbly layer, leaving a little bit of lace
S- strange bouquet of aromas, starting with some toasted grainy malt with a little bit of toffee/caramel, dried dark fruit, blackberries, just a hint of smoke. Not really picking up any saison aromas, but there us an off puting metallic/sour aroma at the end
T- sweet caramel malt flavors are meshed with some astringent dark fruit/berry flavors, their are some faint yeasty saison flavors, but for the most part are masked by a sweet and fruity malt flavor. The smoke aspect is barely detectable any there's some metallic flavors on the finish
M- medium body with low carbonation, slightly foamy mouthfeel with a crisp finish
O- not really sure what they were going for here. This tastes nothing like a saison, the 'smoked' flavors are barely noticeable, and overall it's all over the place

Appearance - dark, no light getting through. Nice finger of light mocha head, lacy and sticky.
Aroma - mostly the dark malts, a whiff of something earthy/saison/funk-like but nothing clear.
Taste - so I'm looking mostly for balance among the black malts and/or smoke, and the saison. The malts are certainly charred, nearly ashen, but not particularly smoky. Mid-palate contains the first note of the saison. I think it's basically the yeast I'm picking up - a little tart and funky but any delicate flavors are lost in the heavy roast. I guess it does what it was intended to do, but it reminds me of a stout that has starting to turn with infection. Ends with the saison dryness and black char.
Mouthfeel - crisp, smooth, good firm body to amply support all the flavor going on.
Overall - not that enjoyable for me, but I can drink and appreciate the good balance to this one.

Pours black with a small head for the style. Smell is smoke, yeast funk, black currant, bit of spice, and some candy sweet smell. Medium mouthfeel and flat for a saison. Fruity flavor, spice, not a lot of smoke. A little funky with some oaky taste and a strange musty bitterness. Finishes dry. Pretty unique, but not blown away by this. Not a bad beer, but not one I would order again.

Served in a Stone IRS glass.
A: Poured a dark, burnt brown, with only a few bubbles posing as a head.
S: Smelled like rotten, fermented fruit actually. Quite a bit of booze in there as well.
T: Still, those rotten esters really lingered which wasn't pleasant. I actually kinda dug the smokiness of this though.
M: Very low in carbonation and lacing overall. Okay here.
O: Never would have tagged this as a saison... more like Belgian Strong or something. Either way, it wasn't good.

Served chilled into a fluted tulip.
Pours a nice sable brown with quarter inch tan, airy head that quickly recedes leaving moderate surface layer and lacing.
Aromas of that musty peppery funk common to the style with a hint of smoke.
Flavors, this is where it falls apart! The flavors follow through from the aromas but they compete with each other to much and nothing really shines through.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a slightly sweet but crisp finish. Fair amount of carbonation and mild aftertaste.
Looks good, smells good, taste is a disappointment. A subpar offering from two otherwise excellent breweries.
