I bought this on the 12th to be opened new years eve. Poured into a stone vertical epic glass.

It pours very dark, black. A thin, film like tan head that disapates quickly. Lace is nice but also fades quickly.

Aroma of dark roasted malts and spice.

A taste of charred malts, roasted if you will. Toasty biscuit with holiday spice, cinnamon, nutmeg with a hint of citris peel and alcohol.

The mouthfeel is smooth and left a slight alcohol dry with a sweet malt coat.

Overall a bitter sweet end of a series, glad I got another in cellar for next year.
V.E. it's been a fun ride!

Appearance is dark, w/ semi beige cap and tight bead w/ opaque clarity

S Smell is strong and spicy w/ ginger and some festive Christmas spice like nutmeg
The malt odor ballasts w/ strong roast And fruity juniper berry tinged

M -thick bitter yet balanced with moderate sweetness and relatively low bitterness w/ mild roastiness and semi dry warming finish

T is spicy, tropical roasted nutty and bitter w/ hoppy pine and pepper w/ light cocoa and ginger notes w/ a hint of coffee and dark cherry

Overall an intense ride might be a good candidate for cellaring but is full of flavor and very drinkable as- is

Poured into a St. Somewhere wine-style glass.

A- Pours an opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains very well then slowly recedes to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and bubbly patches of surface foam. Sticky lacing cascades down the glass.

S- Lots of Belgian spice that creates a sweet potpourri. Notes of clove, nutmeg, and ginger.

T- The spices erupt on the palate, so much so that's all you can taste for the first few sips. Afterwards, grainy roasted malts come through in the finish, but this is mostly spice driven. The Belgian yeast somewhat complements the sweet, flowery flavor profile, but I really just feel like i'm drinking an overly spiced Christmas ale.

M- Somewhat chalky but still viscous enough to keep things slick. Medium carbonation and a mostly full body.

O- This is the darkest spiced beer I've ever had. If it weren't for the dry mouthfeel and the amount of herbs used, this would be somewhat enjoyable. Instead, I recommend aging one to see if maybe some balance could be attained.

Served on tap in a 10 oz tulip glass

Appearance – Served a pitch black color with a one finger tan head. The head fades relatively quickly to leave a great level of lacing on the side of the glass.

Smell- The aroma is heaviest of a roasted malt smell and aromas of clove and cinnamon. Mixed with this there is a light sweetness of some chocolate as well as a light citrus hop aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor. As the taste advances further some sweet chocolate flavors come to the tongue. A coffee flavor and spice flavors of cinnamon and clove spice then develops in the taste, quickly following the fruit flavors. More toward the end, as the coffee and roast intensify some, a bitter hop flavor of a earthy and citrus nature comes to the tongue. These flavors, with a light alcohol flavor, create an odd bitter and roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the average to slightly lower side for a 9% abv brew with a carbonation level that was rather average. The carbonation was good for keeping and making an easy drinking brew, although a slightly thicker body may have been nicer for the darker flavors.

Overall – Not really what I was expected in something that is labeled as a Belgian strong dark. It is roastier and hoppier then I would expect. It wasn't bad though as it did have quite nice transitions between a more initial roast, followed by a light sweet and spice and then finished with a hoppy flavor.

I run hot and cold on Stone but I thought I would try this. It pours very dark with a thin head that persists a bit. It has a spice aroma as you would expect, but it is a unique blend.

The taste is a bit medicinal. They overdid it. It could be that I am overexposed from all the holiday brews, but they have managed to overpower all the nice yeastiness this style could have given.

The aftertaste is OK - not as strong as the taste. So this is a miss, but I shouldn't be able to get it again.

Keeping it cool at Downtown Johnny Browns in San Diego, CA.

Let this thang sit out for a good 20 minutes off the tap and hot damn! Luscious dark textures and flavors that for some reason Raul cannot explain! A bit chile, a bit cinnamon... Get dis! Get dis now!

Raul approves!

Poured into an Arrogant Bastard Ale pint glass. Pours a very dark red brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass. Half finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of dark sweet malt and holiday spicing; cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves; slightly herbal. Flavor is pleasant roasted malt, similar spicing as aroma, chocolate, finishing with cloves, cinnamon, licorice and roasted, almost charred malt and coffee. Medium bodied with nice creaminess. This is an excellent winter warmer and perhaps one of my favorites winter ale and favorite among the Verticals. I will be picking up a few more bottles of this. A perfect and seasonal end for the series. I hope they do another series like this.
