Have had this many times on tap and bottled, so I thought it was finally time to give a proper review.
Pours the usual gold/straw color of most "west coast" ipa's. In this particular bottle there is a good bit of setiment floating around, which is odd because I have never seen that in this beer before. Slight white head with good lacing. Usualy appearance would go for a 4.0 as I think of this as a very clean looking beer, but this time I'll have to put it down to a 3 because of the setiment.
Smell is citrus and hops all the way, though it is not one of the more overwhelmingly floral IPA's. But even though the smell is not particularly strong, the notes are what they should be.
Taste is in line with smell, but stronger. Not much of a malt backbone to speak of. Lots of citrus flavors up front followed by a good amounts of bitterness and finishing with almost a little bit of an apple juice taste (odd). Still a very good hop forward ipa.
Mouthfeel is probably the highlight of the beer. Just the right balance of smoothness and crispness. Carbonation is perfect, and for a beer with such powerful flavors going on, it is pretty easy to drink.
Overall I think of this as kind of the standard for west coast style ipas. Not the best, mind you, but note for note it respresents such a good base line for that style. If I had one complaint, it is that there seems to be a little more variance from serving to serving than I would expect given the pure quantity of this beer that stone has/had brewed over the years. But even within that range, it has been between good and friggin great. Oddly enough, I have had the same issue with their neighbors down the road, green flash, and their ipa (and no, it has not been an issue of age on the beer)....but I digress.... this is a great (and easy to get)west coast ipa, and if you are a fan of the style you should seek it out. Save yourself the 5 bucks, pass over the ruination 6 pack, and pick it up.
