Light amber to brown in color. A minuscule bit of white head partially covers the top of the beer. A bit hazy with Brussels lacing. Incredibly enticing aroma of pine like hops reminiscent of pineapple greets me. The mouth is a little sticky and the bitterness prickles my tongue. When I take a sip I get a short but sharp burst of pine like hops and then some light malt to back it up. I get a nice gentle bitter fade.

Stone first came to Chicagoland in the Spring of 2010.

This was about the time I was beginning to expand my craft beer horizons and Stone was a great brewery to dive into.

Not quite sure why some video reviewers knock on this IPA (thinking Better Beer Authority) here. Although those guys are a bit goofy at times and I find myself disagreeing with them about 80% of the time.

So here is the review. Had this beer on-tap from my basement kegerator (many more pints to come).

Appearance is a bit orange with a nice bright look. Nice lacing on the glass when swirled and about a two finger head.

Smell is citrus focused with a bit of carmel malt at the tail end.

Taste is very smooth. Well balanced play with the hops and malt here where one does not overpower the other. Dry finish. Typical West Coast IPA taste and from the guys that really invented the San Diego IPA style in the 90s.

Mouthfeel is not what you would think with this. Coming in at 6.9% one would think a heavier syrupy mouthfeel would be present. Stone IPA is light and smooth. Some may say a bit watery for the style, but I think it works well with this offering.

Overall just a good solid beer. Stone delivers and I can see why they have such a cult following.

A - Light in color. Light, slightly hazy yellow. 2 finger head, nice lacing.

S - Slightly Hoppy, pine, mild grapefruit, pineapple, malt, bready.

T - Very subtle all the way around. Piney, fruity, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, everything in this is very subtle and balanced.

M - Light body, carbonation is pretty prominent, drinkable, a bread dryness that is inviting for the next drink.

O - Given the style in mind, Stone knocks this out of the park. I'm use to heavier IPAs at this point and I had to keep reminding myself of that during this review. I really like their lineup and this is a great start to the world of craft beer. If you're ready to move up, give ruination a try maybe an Enjoy By IPA? Definitely a journey for the taste buds.

Had this at the brewery a few months back and just now have time to give a proper review from notes.
Appearance is slightly dark amber to copper with a good head and pretty nice lacing after the head diminished.
Aroma was hoppy in the form of some citrus/grapefruit as well as some green floral and pine.
Taste was very similar to the aroma with citrus hops being foremost with some green notes and a bit of malt sweetness. Mouth feel was moderately carbonated with pretty smooth. After taste was pine.
Overall, a very good IPA in my opinion. Well balanced. I wouldn't put it up too high on a pedestal, but nearby.

I take this beer for granted. It is seemingly always available and ive drank it countless times yet failed to review it until now. Draft offering at the Batdorf, served in a standard pint. The brew pours a clear golden with a white cap that fades to a thin white film. Some webby lace hangs on the glass.

The aroma is dank, pine, herbal and citrus rinds like grapefruit are also thrown in there. Grain is hardly an afterthought, this nose is all about the hops.

The taste is bitter with floral hop flavoring. Some herbal grassy and dank aspects. Somewhat pithy to rindy with little to no grain inclusion. Just like the aroma suggested, the flavor too is all about the hops.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. Overall ca crushable IPA that is nicely done and worth throwing a few back.

Served from tap into a plastic "bud-light" cup at a local music club. Great IPA aroma; herbal, citrusy, slightly earthy, along with toasty bready notes. Nice thick head that dissapates into a sheet of lacing (even on a plastic cup) and a fine layer of bubbles that remains on top of the brew. Taste is pure hop bitterness! Herbal hop variety; very piney, some orange pith and grapefruit zest; malt profile is hidden under the hop barrage but very little is to be had in terms of malt complexity or residual sweetness. Very dry and assertive. Medium thin mouthfeel. Overall a very aggressive IPA and the benchmark set by Stone. I much prefer the sweeter, less herbal taste of Sierra Nevada torpedo extra IPA, or even the juicy-fruit bomb that is 'Stone's Enjoy' By line. Just my own personal tastes. Fans of a botanical, earthy, bitter IPA love this beer and rightly so.

Usualy on tap around my parts... Real nice orangey gold with a light cream/white head. Very fruity up front with some of stones Special B trademark flavours. If there are all the light lager beers on tap all over the place I am almost sure to see this guy hidden in the mix. Stone is a benchmark for craft breweries in SD and deserves to be beside the "giants" dt its stand for craft breweries... Dont be surprised if Stone is the first craft brewery gone wild.

Pours out to a creamy white head, concentric rings of lace, and hazy golden color. Aroma is "c" hops and sticky Carapils malt with notes of pine, citrus and cilantro. Flavor is a world class blend of pungent hops in your face, pale malt backdrop and lingering alpha acid bite. Mouthfeel is light to medium and carries the flavors well. On the whole, a damn fine American IPA made by people who stake thier rep on quality and craftsmanship.

This will sneak up on you. Overpowering and citrusy at first, within a few moments it's all gone. Then you order another one, then another, and another, soon you're barking at the moon. Instead of "Stone" why not call it "Stoned" because that's how it makes you.

First had on-tap in a pint glass. Pours a nice golden color with thin white head. Perfect lacing. Right away you can smell an almost overwhelming amount of pine, which is at the forefront of both the smell and taste. At first, the bitterness can be a bit much, but the flavor just takes over so wonderfully. Very piney flavor with just a hint of wheat at the last second. This is honestly one of the smoothest tasting, if not THE smoothest tasting, IPAs I've ever had. Even if you're not a fan of IPAs this is a must have.

Straw yellow color, 2 fingers of head, great retention and lacing. Clear

Smell is over the top hoppy, extremely resinous with a ton of pine, some citrus, a little dank

Taste follows the nose, big pine and citrus. Big punch of bitterness. Clean malt profile with just a touch of sweetness. Dry and crisp finish.

As aggressive as an ipa gets, way better on tap.

This is a modest, yet outstanding IPA. On draft at Silk City in Philadelphia PA.

This beer has a lot of the qualities typically found in DIPA's. Citrus notes and a slight bitter that reminds me of a tasty grapefruit.

I would definitely order this again, and was a perfect pair for my Spicey Asian Tuna Berger.

A: Dark copper with a white head. Very strong lacing and retention. Lots of bubbles streaming towards the top.

S: Grapefruit, pine needles, slight skunkiness/dankness. Typical IPA smell all the way through.

T: Has a bit of malty/grainy sweetness which is quickly cut down by the hop taste. Grapefruit, citrus peels, and pine. Leaves an overall bitter aftertaste. Clean IPA taste with nothing that I can find offensive.

M: Feels to be medium bodied with a medium-high amount of carbonation. Dry and prickly on the tongue.

O: This is a very solid IPA that is definitely worth a try.

At PJ's in Bethlehem

A: Thin head off white head. Golden orange with beautiful lacing all around the glass.

S: Pungent floral, citrus, pine hop. Very little malt, only enough to keep this beer honest. Just what you'd expect in a beautifully done IPA.

T: This beer tastes amazingly hoppy with a delicious bitterness. Just like the smell the taste is focused on citrus like grapefruit, also some pine, and a nice floral touch. Add the right amount of malt and it makes this hoppy beer absolutely tasty.

M: Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a little resiny from the hops, and the carbonation is mild.

O: This beer is so good after a long day. It delivers on bitter and juicy citrus and pine hop flavors. I was glad to find this one on tap because I've had older bottles before that did not deliver anywhere close to the hop pungency this beer was designed to impart on its drinkers.

Served on tap in a sample glass.

Appearance: Amber color with a white head.

Smell: Smell of citrus and malts. Heavy on the hops.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Medium bodied, smooth. Heavy on the hops, I would guess from the dry hopping, and some malt in the backround.

Overall: Great IPA! Enjoyed this one very much.

P: Orange copper body big creamy offwhite head. Slightly hazy.

S: hopped up nose with fresh citrus and tropical fruit hops with wood and hints of earthy/floral hops. The glass has somewhat of an aroma and makes it hard to dissect. Crisp and fresh.

T/M: Super fresh grapefruit, juicy tropical fruits, pears, mangos, pineapple, hints of honey, fresh pine needles and pine resin. Malt is toasty and doughy hints of sour dough. Creamy delicious mouthfeel with prickly carbonation. Finish is smooth and dry with a pleasant explosion of hops from start to finish.

O: I was glad to see this on tap at a restraints while visiting South Carolina a for my relocation. First Stone beer and I can say it was freaking great. Everything I look for in an IPA. Fresh and hopped up. I look forward to living in this state. Cheers!

I've enjoyed many a bottle, but finally on-tap at the 2012 ABR. From notes.

Golden with a cap of white foam, good retention and lacing. Smell has a distinct tropical fruit bouquet with punchy orange/grapefruit zest and resinous pine, subtle mint and pale malt.

Taste is primarly juicy orange and grapefruit pith and resinous pine, not as much of the tropical fruits here. Slightly herbal. Bitterness is moderate, but not overpowering. Medium body that's brightly carbonated. Bitterness is respectful and doesn't blow out the palate, maintains plenty of hop flavor, with moderate bitterness is refreshing and juicy. Very, very good IPA.

Served at iTap in Soulard St Louis MO. Was an excellent choice while dodging a hail storm. Had a smooth taste, not bitter.

Nothing short of great, Stone delivers a fine IPA which, strength-speaking, really isn't too far off their double - Ruination. While still being decidedly less strong overall, this IPA is huge on hops. They dominate the nose and palate, leaving a sticky hop residue in the back of your mouth. Hopheads rejoice! Personally, I'd take Ruination over this one, but to get a 6 pack of this one is about 5 dollars cheaper, and I couldn't fault anyone for grabbing one. It is a great beer.
