What more can I say about this particular India Pale Ale other than it's amongst my favorites.... This is one of the hoppier I.P.A. brews I've ever had.... I can honestly say that I love everything that comes out of this San Diego based brewery.... Stone I.P.A. has such a perfectly balanced hoppy taste along with a perfectly hoppy nose to match it.... With my increased pallete for beer over the years (generally, only giving beers of a 7.5 ABV or higher a chance), this is one I can always go back to because of its increasing availability.... Love it !!

The Beers of California

#5

Freshness Date: None

A: Hazy golden orange with a finger of off white foam which has decent retention leaving behind faint reticular lacing on the glass.

S: Strong notes of citrus and pine. Faint caramel sweetness.

T: Great grapefruit citrus notes along with pine, floral , and herbal qualities. The biscuity sweet malts float in and out of the palate but are overall inundated by the hops. Biting spice finish.

M: Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel with exceptional linger.

O: The hops really take the show. A solid IPA which is widely circulated throughout California. A great introduction for anyone interested in the California microbrew scene.

Served from a bottle to a pint glass at King Street Grill Charleston, SC

A- Nice golden haze with good carbonation and just the right amount of cloudiness...virtually no head whatsoever though, but this may be due to it being served to cold

S- probably the highest point of the beer. Absolutely loaded with hop spice that immediately fills the nostrils. Follows with that nice citrusy scents. This is what and IPA should smell like.

T- Follows through on the nose. Delicious hops fill the palate, but do tend to fade off towards the aftertaste leaving something to be desired. That being said that specific note does make this brew more drinkable over a long period of time than some other as it does not inherently blast your palate.

F-Nice, decent amount of texture nothing to really write home about

O- This is an IPA that is easily accessible throughout the states and more often than not should be your choice when opposed to the selection

The first time I had this, it was one of those huge bottles. I thought it was fairly bitter and unbalanced. A few months later, I thought to give it another try. This was a 12oz bottle "Best Buy 10/1/12."

Very nice appearance. Much lighter than I expected in color. A a fain tan, copper color. But quite a bit lighter than other beers of this style. I know it's quite difficult to make beers this light that have any substantial flavor so I appreciate the technical element in it.

The aroma is quite hoppy, but not as citrus or bright as the typical IPA. It's not your usual fruit bomb smell. A rich piney smell. Pretty standard IPA smell.

Taste is obviously quite bitter, given the style. But exceedingly smooth. Slightly malty. It has a nearly perfect balance of malt, hops, sweetness, and bitterness. Aftertaste is not present. The term "aftertaste" is perjorative term precisely because it sucks to have anything linger. I like to have the beer leave nothing but a nice memory after I swallow. This leaves a hint of hops but that's it. Absolutely no flavor of alcohol noted, which is commendable given the 6.9%. The belly says, "Thanks for the strong beer, hands!"

The beer is a bit thicker than I would like.

Overall, quite nice. The taste is quite splendid. I would be hard pressed to find anything to fault the flavor with at all. Excellent product.
