I've had it millions of times, both in bottle, on draft, at bars, at the brewery, and at home. I found an amazingly fresh 6 pack at Trader Joe's for 9.49; I figured I had to give it a proper review.

Poured into a goblet from a 12 oz bottle dated fresh by 03/25/2012.

A: Pours a golden yellow/orange tone. Great carbonation from the bottom of glass with 2 inch bread off-white head. decent lacing.

S: The hops don't really come out as fresh as on tap. Maybe I have become used to this beers profile, but you get faint citrusy notes.

T: Refreshingly crisp, bitter, and citrusy. Very mellow but flavorful malt backbone that keeps everything nicely balance. Good front end bitterness finishes off with a trace of citrus peel. You can keep drinking this until the glass is empty. A true classic.

M: Light, yet flavorful. This does not weigh down at all.

O: A pioneer and true classic in the West Coast Indian Pale Ale style. It's amazing to think this thing was as bitter as you could get years ago; now it's a very approachable and full flavored staple. A plus.

This was served from the bottle at P.F. Chang’s in Stamford, CT into a tall pilsner glass. The beer appeared a hazy gold color, holding a soft two finger head of white bubbles. This showed great retention, leaving thick lacing behind it. No sediment was noted, but a moderate haze permeated the liquid. The aroma was big on grapefruit hops, with a balance of lightly toasted malts. The hops really dominated the show, but were helped along by light black pepper and spice, metallic pale grains, and a brief honey sweetness. As we sipped, the taste opened up with lemon and hoppy cleanliness. These were light and sweet, with an earthy quality towards the back. To make things even lighter there was light strawberry fruitiness. The middle peaked with a renewed fruity sweetness, but this time of cherries, with a hint of fusel ethanol. The finish was strongly of lemon rind and grapefruit hop action, with little else, even from the malt bill. The aftertaste breathed of a balance between clean malts, crisp hops, fresh grass, and slightly more metallics than in the nose. The body was medium and the carbonation was medium. To each sip there was a light and airy feel, with soft slurp and froth. The liquid was more coating than drying, but the mouth was left happy. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was how light it was, but also how robust the flavoring was despite this. Throughout there was great hop freshness, with enough room left for the malts. This is a nice standard for the style.
