This beer was served out of a 12oz. bottle dispensed into a glass....

Presentation - Stone label and artwork are just the coolest. Label is painted or embossed not sure which. Gives it top notch feel and look.

Appearance - Pours out a golden yellow/orange color with surprisingly dense 2 finger white foam head. Head retention is about average, sticking around for about a minute before dissipating into an airy foam covering. Leaves excellent lacing.

Smell - Smell is truly amazing. A HUGE aroma! Smells of strong citrus hops with hints of tropical fruit. IMO, falls more on the Piney hop side than the floral hop side. Very faint hints of malt scent throughout.

Taste - Taste is just as amazing as the smell. A malty start gives way to intense hop flavors. The combination of citrus/piney/sweet tropical fruit-like hop bitterness is amazing!

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Starts off very crisp before turning smooth slightly creamy on the back end.

Drinkability - Smell/taste/mouthfeel combo make this extremely drinkable. Cant just have one!

Best IPA that I have ever had and one of the best beer I have ever had PERIOD! One of the few beer that made me say "Oh MY" when I had the pleasure of trying it. As good as this is out of the bottle, I had the joy of trying this fresh when I visited Stone while out in San Diego in the Summer of 2011 and its even better!!! A real treat! Worth the little extra $$$$ IMO!!!

$9.99 a 6-pk and Poured into a schooner
A: aggressive pour, half finger white head, hazy amber, some early lacing.
S: pretty strong hops aroma, peaches
T: peach fuzz or pineapple, hops have a long finish.
M: carbonation is good, crisp, long hops finish on the back of the tongue.
O: a good IPA crisp and bitter, it probably leans a little to much on the hops and I would prefer a little heavier body and malty balance. The peach tones are strong.

I might buy it again but only on sale.

Poured into the Sierra Nevada/Dogfish IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear straw yellow with some orange highlights. A voluminous, 3 fingers tall pure white head forms slowly as the beer is poured into the glass. Amazing head retention and the head leaves absolute curtains of lace as it slowly recedes.

Aroma: Some faint juicy grapefruit, spicy notes of pine and a dark, earthy onion note before you're greeted by quite a substantial, bread-like maltiness with noticeable yeast esters to round off the surprisingly low key aroma(for Stone, that is) This smells like somewhat of a traditional English IPA made with American hop varieties.

Taste: Right up front your palate is greeted with some classic American hop characteristics; juicy grapefruit, orange, and spicy, resinous pine, but just as their flavors start to grow stronger and stronger, a sizable, very bready and biscuity malt backbone rises up and helps lesson the bitter bite from the hops. The beer finishes dry with a strong, assertive bitterness with lingering notes of pine resin, grapefruit rind and even more breadiness left dancing on your palate.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: Stone takes the malty English IPA style and marries it with some in-your-face American hops(Cascade, Chinook and Columbus). I wish the hops were a bit more bright and aggressive, but the hops that really showcase those ripe, juicy characteristics that most 21st century hop heads crave weren't bred during time that Stone came up with this very balanced and dry IPA recipe. I haven't drank this IPA in quite some years, but I am certainly happy I revisited it.

12oz bottle poured into New Belgium Globe glass

A - clear, amber/yellowish color. Mostly clear with a slight haze. Pours with a small clean head. Small in size, it vanishes quickly. Small persistent pool of foam in the middle (thanks to the glass). Very light lacing early.

S - piney w/ slight citrus undertones. Not overwhelming but very spot on for the style.

T - tastes like it smells. Still amazed I hadn't tried this touchStone beer from Stone (bad pun intended). Perfect amount of hops for an IPA and balanced with the alcohol. Finishes clean and refreshing. One drink begs another and another.

M - light on the palate and finishes clean. Smooth throughout. Crisp.

O - Stone is a great brewery and that reputation is made through their perennial beers like this one. An IPA very true to the style. Will definitely be a go to beer for me from now on. Still prefer the IIPA but this is a fantastic IPA.
