look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

A - Inch and a half head with a gorgeous hazy golden pour.

S - Hops burst with citrus and pine, very well balanced between the two (this being one of the first IPA's i can really find myself thinking grapefruit as opposed to orange)

T - Very similar to the aroma with the malt flavor coming forward more than i expected based on the aroma. This balances out the flavor profile extremely well.

M - Light to Medium body with a drying finish.

O - This west coast IPA really shines in my opinion. As my palate matures I'm sure I will find myself reaching for stronger doubles and imperial IPAs but for the moment this seems to be my comfort level.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance (4/5): Bright orange, huge three finger white head. Lots and lots of lacing. Head reduces to an eighth inch white rim.

Smell (4/5): Sweet bready crystal malt, piney and grapefruity scents. Not super-complex, just very hoppy.

Taste (4.25/5): Exceptionally bitter and grapefruity. Pine also shines through. Grapefruit pith in the finish. A paragon of west coast IPA flavor. Sweet malt backbone acts as good counterpoint to the heavy hopping, but it solely functions in a supporting role.

Mouthfeel (4/5): Mouthfeel is medium light, perhaps lighter than other West Coast IPAs for its exceptionally light, unobtrusive malt bill. A resinous, dry finish lingers for days and has an aftertaste of pink grapefruit rind.

Overall (4.25/5): Still a wonderful beer. I do at times when drinking this beer wish for more body and more malt. Other beers, like Green Flash West Coast IPA, have a more prominent malt bill, which I favor. That being said, Stone IPA is a true trailblazer. It remains one excellent IPA, particularly when enjoyed with a month or less of age on it.

From notes on 02/13/12:
Growler from Whole Foods; Poured in a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

A - One inch of white, fluffy head with excellent retention; The color is a mixture of caramel and straw; Clear appearance; Nice lacing left behind

S - Very light and floral in the smell; Other hints of hops are there too: pine, grapefruit, and later pineapple; Toasted toffee lurks beneath the hops

T - Nice dose of bitterness up front that weakens towards the end of the taste; Lots of hops present as well with floral, pine, pepper, lemon, and pineapple flavors; Toasted caramel and toffee is able to peek through the hops near the end of the taste

M - Just above moderate carbonation; Just under medium bodied; Slightly dry finish

O - This is the first Stone IPA I've had in awhile, and it still doesn't disappoint. There's actually more bitterness in this beer than I remembered from before, but that's certainly not a bad thing for me. The hop flavors are delicious, with a good showing of the floral and pine varieties, which make this a very uplifting and drinkable beer. This brew has always been one of my favorites, and will continue to be one I come back to.

22oz bomber with an enjoy by date of 01.22.12. Should have looked at that more closely when I bought it. Anyways, pours a hazy orange-gold with about 3 fingers of white head that simmers to about one. Great lacing on the glass.

Smell -- one of the best IPA aromas I have had the pleasure of inhaling. Deliciously citrus--grapefruit--in character with some pine. Also hints of pineapple juice.

Taste -- not quite as bitter/pungent as expected/hoped for. And that may be because of drinking this about a month after the recommended date on the bottle. I really thought this stuff moved off the shelf pretty quickly, so I didn't even bother to check. Or it could be that I was expecting something with more IBUs, like an imperial IPA. Back to the beer--has a good malty/biscuit backbone that the hops are just able to punch through. Still has some pungent citrus flavors--grapefruit/pineapple/tangerine--and finishes slightly dry with some crisp bitterness.

Mouthfeel is crisp with some oily slickness from the hop oils. The body is slightly thin. Somewhat lacks the pucker factor I was looking for. Overall, this one is still good, despite a little age on it, but I will have to seek out another one that is fresher and adjust my review accordingly if warranted. Compared with other American IPAs, it definitely holds its own.
