Pours a very murky, dark golden orange, almost brown color with slight tangerine edges and a half finger, off-white head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind.
Slightly boozy red wine barrel aroma. Very vinous with lots of oak and dark fruit followed by boozy sweetness, sweet malt and earthy hops. Strong alcohol presence with dry toasted oak, red wine, grape and dark cherry. IPA notes are kind of faint at this point with slight earthy pine needle. Lots of ethanol and red wine character.
Slick medium body with a prominent red wine barrel presence. Boozy with lots of dry toothpick/toasted oak followed by subtle vinous fruit, sweet malt and bitter, earthy hops. All barrel and booze up front with strawberry, dark grape, cherry and currant. Sweet malt flavor underneath with sherry like sweetness, toffee and caramel. IPA are present than in aroma but the barrel notes and booze are really strong, slightly overpowering the other notes. Very vinous and boozy with bitter, resinous hops in the finish .

Pours a semi hazy, dark golden orange with a small wisp of white foam that settles out to a solid white cap.
Aromas begin with initial caramelized maltiness with lesser toffee, caramel and some toasted sweet breadiness. Then you get the light red wine with a dash of oak, and some lingering earthy and slightly spicy hop presence.
The taste follows the nose with a heavy dose of toasted English bready malts with the accompanying caramel, toffee and almost brown sugar sweetness. The hops are also there once again, earthy, spicy English variety which imparts a balance of bitterness and flavor to counteract the heavy malt sweetness. The oak and red wine flavor impact is subtle and provides an interesting transition between the sweet malt characteristics and the hop bitterness.
The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a medium amount of carbonation, maybe a little on the lesser side of medium. The finish is smooth, with a lingering coating mouthfeel.
Overall I really enjoyed the original Empirical DIPA when it was first released and I love mostly anything aged in a Red Wine Barrel but I was skeptical of this because Red Wine and big English IPA seemed weird, but this really well done and enjoyable. The base beer still stands out with only a balanced oak/wine flavor which could have easily been overdone. Great hybrid of styles and definitely recommended.
