On tap at the Blind Tiger in New York City.
Appearance: Jet black with frothy tan head that laced like mad.
Smell: Chocolate malt and toffee aromas.
Taste: Starts off with a surprising hops flavor. Follows with strong bitter chocolate malt taste. Coffee aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Thick with light carbonation.
Drinkability: Very easy drinking.
Comments: I was surprised and disappointed that I could not detect any smoky characteristics, but I enjoyed this nevertheless.

reviewed from notes (2/10/12)
A: ours dark brownish black, looks like it has a medium body
S: definitely smells of smoked malt but not overpowering like stickin your head in a campfire. roasted malt backdrop
T: this is great not too smokey not too subtle, very balanced, delicious! Seems to be the best value for flavor and price.
m: medium carbonation slightly silky after effect on the palate.
O.A.: this beer is a good in-betweener, you could spend your time sipping this one for its richness or its a good session porter, not too rich if you don't want to take your time.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #42 of the ones I've reviewed here.
Pour is decent but nothing outstanding, although props to the long-lasting head on this. Typical nose of coffee and cocoa, this time with a hint of smoke. The mouthfeel is pretty routine outside of a wonderfully lingering finish of liquid smoke. Tastes in general, though, are the usual hopped up coffee/cocoa, with a slight hint of smoke dancing around in the background.
Good, not great beer. The smoking is distinctive but that's the only distinctive thing about it, without that this is a decent, but bog-standard porter. Adding the smoke does kick this up a little and it's worth a try as a result, but this is hardly the definitive take on this idea.
