Nice 22oz. bottle. i am always intrigued by the Stone Brewing Company bottles. I've had this beer on a few previous occasions, most recently on a visit to my dear friend Shane, as he had a bomber of this and a bomber of Rogue Shakesphere Stout awaiting my arrival after 10 long hours of driving from Virginia Beach to Columbus Ohio. To say this beer holds fond memories for me is quite the understatement.

Purchased this from my local Farm Fresh store for $3.89. This beer poured a beautiful black/ruby color, and created a stunning 2 finger grey/tan head that pillowed above my glass. This head slowly settled as I drank, yet continued to leave a sticky lace along the sides of my glass all the way down. Beautiful.

This beer had a nice skokey smell (duh!) with hints of caramel, and a faint whiff of alcohol.

This beer had a mighty nice taste to it. Everytime I taste this beer, it has something slightly different to offer from past tasting experiences. On this occasion, the taste really hit me in the back of my mouth. Very bitter, tastes of roasted malts, very round upon my tongue, full flavors of coffee, slightly nutty, and some tastes of alcohol. This beer left a HUGE aftertaste in my mouth. I found this porter to be very smooth, somewhat complex, and very nice to drink. Count me in for at least one of these, but certainly not a beer I could drink all night long (well...maybe. This is subject to change!)

Pours jet black with a thin white head and moderate lacing. I picked up the smokiness in this immediately although some seem to not have. Vanilla, toffee, tart cherry, a touch of coffee and a full amount of smokiness that makes bacon ring through my mind. Not much carbonation and the flavors made it feel like I was drinking flat soda (in a good way, for those who deem it possible) towards the end. Very enjoyable!

A: A deep brown with ruby red highlights coming through in the light. One finger of head. Died too quickly IMO and left minimal lacing when it was around.

S: toffee, caramel, some dark fruit and an ashy (not in a bad way) roasty element as well.

T: Didn't get much of the smoke element as advertised and much less a peat flavor but that's okay. Toffee and caramel malt are pretty present taking the forefront of the beer. Almost equally chocolate and darker malt appear. Dark fruit , no so much in an ester sense, but more of like a dark caramelized plum and more malty then anything. Hop bitterness is less then I would have expected and is balanced nicely.

M: Thin honestly, way to thin for a porter. This seems to make the carbonation "bristly" and prickly a touch which is something that should never appear in a quality porter.

O: This was a great beer overall. No peat and this is really not a single malt in a pint glass but it does a good job at being very drinkable, flavorful, and remaining interesting to the palate throughout the experience. Mouth feel definitely needs work though but then again who am I too tell STONE how to brew a beer.

Drank 7.19.14, on-tap at Drop Off Service in the East Village.

A: Dark mahogany brown, with a deep red highlights. Thick and creamy one finger head, dark tan in color, fades to a moderate cap. Nice pitting, leaves tons of lace throughout the entire glass.

S: Roasted malt, with undertones of smoke and chocolate/caramel. Fairly hoppy and bitter for a porter, but it works reasonably well.

T: Roasted dark malt dominates, subtle dark fruit flavors, and a lingering smoke flavor. Was really expecting a deeper, more complex taste.

M:Moderate carbonation, fairly thin for a bigger porter (was expecting something more from Stone). Smooth up front, smooth in the middle, and a bitter finish.

O: As a porter alone, it is fine enough...tasty in its own right, but not something I would reach for over Founders/Great Lakes/Deschutes. As a "smoked" porter? I am left underwhelmed. I would have assumed the smoke would be much more robust and ingrained.
