Poured from 22 oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: deep, dark brown with flashes of ruby when held up to the light. Carbonation cascades to form a one-finger tan head which dissipated slowly leaving an attractive lace.
Smell: lots of chocolate with a nice roastiness and a light trace of hops.
Taste: a very complex, dynamic flavor. Up front is a little chocolate with an astringent bitterness; this gives way to the lightest of smokiness and is finally finished with a sweet malt flavor and a nicely bitter aftertaste. Each sip is interesting.
Mouthfeel: body is on the heavy side of medium and carbonation, though light, lends a nice creaminess.
Drinkability: highly drinkable to an extent, but it is just not quite smooth enough to be a long session beer. Still quite delicious.
I like that this is a smoked beer that uses the smoke as a subtle addition to the final flavor, rather than the number one characteristic.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #42 of the ones I've reviewed here.
Pour is decent but nothing outstanding, although props to the long-lasting head on this. Typical nose of coffee and cocoa, this time with a hint of smoke. The mouthfeel is pretty routine outside of a wonderfully lingering finish of liquid smoke. Tastes in general, though, are the usual hopped up coffee/cocoa, with a slight hint of smoke dancing around in the background.
Good, not great beer. The smoking is distinctive but that's the only distinctive thing about it, without that this is a decent, but bog-standard porter. Adding the smoke does kick this up a little and it's worth a try as a result, but this is hardly the definitive take on this idea.
