Very dark brown on the pour, with a big frothy tan head that slips away very slowly. Lots of lace is left behind.

Smell is roasted barley, a slight smoke aroma, some chocolate, and maybe even a bit of fig. There's a nice bitter hoppy aroma blended with some coffee notes as well.

The flavor is about what you'd hope for from this one...a rich, roasty smoke flavor coupled with a solid coffee bitterness and a dark chocolate taste. The hops are there, but somewhat overshadowed by the smoke.

Overall: Another tasty brew from Stone, definitely a yummy porter.

Poured from 22 oz bomber into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a deep brown nearly black color with a thick one finger tan head. The head had very nice retention leaving a medium amount of lacing.

Smell – Roasted malt is heaviest in the nose. These are cocoa and dark bread in nature with lighter hints of some smokiness, pine and a nice caramel/brown sugar sweetness.

Taste – A smooth roasted malt and cocoa flavor mixed with a light sweet caramel start the taste out. The caramel fades as some hoppy flavors come to the tongue. These are largely earthy in nature with lighter flavors of pine. At the end, the smoke that is suggested in the name, comes to fruition along with a resurgence (light resurgence) of some sweeter flavors.
Overall a very nice taste is left on the tongue in the end.

Mouthfeel – Creamier then the average brew with a slightly lighter level of carbonation. Very nice for the roasty-smoky flavors of the brew.

Overall – It’s a rather easy to drink, roasty and a good go to for a slightly dryer porter. Not too shabby.

Bottle best before 2/26/13 poured into a Guinness tulip.

A: Dark brown, some red hues. Nice light brown head retains well, leaves patchy lace.

S: Lightly roasted malt aromas mixed with even lighter smoke. Some coffee, mellow cocoa sweetness.

T: Roasted malt upfront, in comes the ever so light smokiness, a good amount of roasted coffee and cocoa bean, finishes quite dry, theres a noticeable hop character as well but its subtle.

M: Medium feel and medium carbonation. Smooth feel and sessionable feel.

O: Nice roasty porter, not too much char or smoke which I like and a good dose of coffee and cocoa to balance the roastiness.

on tap at devils den in philly

Pours a blacked out color with a thick tanned head. Plenty of lacing on the glass as the head retains on top of the brew throughout most of the pour.

Nice fluff of smoke in the nose, but not overpowering. Roasted malts with some bittersweet chocolate and toffee, vanilla as well.

Slight hop presence up front followed by the semi-sweet chocolate and vanilla tones. Distinct notes of smoke, but doesn't blow away the rest of the beer. Hints of coffee beans. Roasted malts hold down a full backbone with some sweetness. Finishes smoky and dry.

Fuller medium body, nice carbonation, somewhat soft and smooth on the tongue. Drinks nicely and quickly, despite being a darker beer, and the smoke is well balanced with the malty flavors.

Dark brown with only a hint of amber red at the bottom of the glass, the bubbles on the pour billow beneath the surface before forming a dense head, too dark to trace bubble beads. Roasted malts, coffee bean, cocoa powder and an herbal streak fashion the nose, hint of rum raisin, takes the turns at high speeds as if wanting to show off. Full-bodied, very smoky with a strong chicory streak, gives it a more dark chocolate and bitter profile. The raisin, plum fruit sneaks onto stage, sweetened by molasses crisp notes. Minimal sign of hops, malt the whole way through. Suggests it could be more bitter than it is, this for the best.
