On tap, poured into a snifter.
Appearance - dark, with a creamy white head. This looks like an after dinner drink, so I let this one sit. Lacing is decent.
Smell - French roast, maybe some espresso, s'mores!
Taste - made the right call to enjoy this after dinner! Complex, rich and flavorful; perhaps my new favorite for the style!
Feel - medium body, complex and bold flavors.
Overall - I'd like to have this again soon, as I may actually be underrating it a bit here.

Appearance is a dark brown with a finger of tan head that dissipated quickly. The nose is nice and roasty and the roast profile is solid and tasty. The finish is plain old bitter roasted goodness.

My only complaint is that there really is no smoke in this porter. I really enjoy the blend of smokiness with the porter bite, but this offering only delivers on half of the promise.

Poured on tap at local bottle shop.

A: Dak brown almost black with nice two finger head.

S: Smokey goodness. Roasty grains. Maybe some faint hops in the back.

T: Roasted sweet malts mixed with a faint smoke. Bitter chocolate.

M: Nice crisp clean body and good carbonation.

O: This is an easy drinking clean porter. One of my favorite porters so far. I think this is one of the unsung heroes of Stone's year round line up.

coffee dark, mild head, leaves a persistent ring and some lacing showing on sampler cup. smoke is mild, pleasant, brew is bitter up front. finish is dry/bitter. stickiness in the middle is pleasing. definitely one to revisit .

This is one of my favorite beers. I just have to go out of state to get it.

A - A very dark inviting Porter with just the right amount of carbonation.

S - Smells of smoky roasted malts with a hint of caramel.

T - An excellent Ported with a slightly smoky taste that is not over-bearing.

M - Full bodied, but very smooth and easy to drink.

O - A great Porter to drink by itself or with a good steak.

Pours a dark brown color with a finger of bone white head. Smell isn't very strong but is mostly roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts up front, with coffee and hints of chocolate. Mouth is very smooth with a little more carbonation than I was expecting. Overall, another great beer from Stone. I don't think I've ever been disappointed by them.

On-Tap, pint glass at Mississippi Pizza, Portalnd, Oregon March 11, 2013

Appearance: Dark, almost opaque. Off white head, good retention

Smell: Not strong, slight malt sweetness

Taste: Malt forward, slight roastiness, smoke flavor hidden deep. Milk chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Lighter side for porter. Above average carbonation.

Overall: A great porter. One I would revisit. Smokiness almost not enough, although better to err on too little, perhaps...

Reviewed from notes taken 02/17/13.

Served on tap, 12oz. pour, at Yard House in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Very dark brown, not quite black, certain hints of red. Thin light mocha head with lots of lacing.

Roasted/spiced malt aromas are light; not too prominent or pervasive. Wish it had more.

Roasted/spiced and smokey, definitely more hoppy than expected. It tastes very good.

Very smooth up front, with a dry finish; light to medium carbonation.

Overall this was surprising, did expect it to be as good as it was. Will try to again. Cheers.

I am fairly skeptical of Porters generally because I feel that they are hard to pull off. The Smoked Porter from Stone definitely does a good job and keeps the smokiness genuine without overdoing it. This is a great sipping beer and very nuanced. Highly recommend.

On tap at the brewery the beer arrives a dark brown color with rich copper edges in the light. A nice 1/5 finger beige head with good retention and some lacing. The nose is that of roasted malt, chocolate, piney floral hops. Not as smoky as anticipated. The flavor delivers more smoke as expected but not so much that you feel like you're sucking on a charcoal briquette. Pleasant. Again roasted malts and chocolate. Medium bitterness from the piney earthy hops. Finishes clean and smooth with a lingering roasted smoke flavor. Medium bodied and well carbonated. I am typically not a fan of smoked beer, but this has a gentle enough smoke character that it is enjoyable. Good beer.

A – Beer pours a very dark brown, almost black and opaque with a thick tan head.

S – The first smell this beer reminded me of was a smoked cheese, in a good way. It has a very smoky, malty scent with hints of chocolate.

T – A delicious roasted malt flavor comes through with the notes of chocolate, coffee and smoke. Has a slightly bitter bite to it.

M – The beer has a good medium body with the right amount of carbonation.

O – I had this delicious beer on tap at the Stone Brewing restaurant and it was definitely a highlight of the ones I sampled. It has a distinct flavor and worth enjoying again.

Dark at first sight with a light brown head. A robust feel at the first sip followed by a smile. There is relaxation while making this brew. There is no right or wrong here, as the master brewer was not in a hurry I feel. There is a sense of hops, but not too much. The word caramel comes to my mind, I feel for the color but there is a bit of sweetness that compliments the hops. I know there is a chocolatyness to this - yet I feel it, but cannot describe it. The smoke though is obvious, this I can describe, do not worry there is no alarm to this fire. The sugars and the bitters blend togeather, I cannot distinguish the blacks from whites - a fine grey has been created. A taste from one of the gods I would guess, this taste is bliss....
I give this a 4.25 w/ a margin of .1
The senses are all sharing their emotions at this time.

Had on tap at the Stone Brewery.

Beer pours a nice rich brown with a bit of tan head on top.

Beer smeels very roasty and chocolatey. Not a great bit of smoke as I would have expected.

The beer tastes like the nose. A nice chocolate taste, with just a slight bit of smoke to add some roasty flavor. Kind of wish there was a bit more smoked, honestly.

The mouthfeel is on the ligher side. Not too thick.

Overall, a nice porter.

On tap at for Pete's sake...

Poured into a pint glass, color is black, light tan head, nice bit of lacing.

Smell took some time to come through, very feint smokiness, but clean otherwise.

Taste is about spot on for a smoked porter, clean smoke flavor, hint of roasted malt and just enough sweetness.

Mouthfeel is also very good, well balanced, nice lingering flavor and good carbonation.

A very solid smoked beer, that leaves a bit to be desired if you like more smoke presence, but a great beer in the backbone.

On tap into a pint glass

A: Nearly jet black. Ruby tones. Respectable asn, foamy head. Excellent.

S: Bitter cocoa, smoke (fruitwood). Nice hrainy element (biscuit).

T: Somewhat underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it is nice but a little lighter than expected. Smokiness is very light and offers an umami element. woodiness, cola spice, bitter.

M: A little too thin and dry for my taste. Okay.

D: Good. Would happily enjoy or offer to others.

this beer kicks ass, so damn good! pours black like a starless night and has a one inch lacing tan head. smells like a rauchbier, smokey as a raging bonfire, and roasty dark malty like a sturdy american stout. flavor is less intense than the nose, but its rich in the mouth without being too much. smokey again, with mellow hop bitterness in the finish. i cant do this beer justice in words, but i had the middle ages smoked porter 3 days ago and this absolutely destroys what i thought was an excellent beer. this is epic. so smooth and full bodied, but the aftertaste and the bellyfeel make this one of the best porters of all time. well done again by stone!!!

Had this more than once at Lucky Baldwins is Pasadena. 5 dollars a pint. WHAT???? (Cherumbim is the raddest server ever)

A: One of the most attractive aspects of this beer is the inky blackness of it, topped with the mocha head that clings all the down the glass, right until the last swallow.

S: Mocha, baking chocolate, campfire, pancake syrup, and malt, with a touch of spiciness.

T: sweet malty goodness, very light smoke profile and rich mocha, not too strong on the hops, but good balance from the bitter toasted grain component.

M: Smooth as silk. Light carbonation makes this go down like chocolate milk almost.

O: This is an old standby for me. Not a great summer brew, but when the weather starts turning ugly this becomes one of my favorite session beers.

Stone Smoked Porter, on tap @ Kahootz in Meridian ID. Served in a pint glass.

A: Pours dark black but transparent on the edges with amber hues and a generous light tan/mocha colored head. Good lace.

S: Subdued smoke, roast coffee at the forefront, roasted malts, light smoked wood, milk chocolate notes. Very balanced and not too in-your-face.

T: Smoked malts, roasted character, light astringency and smoky dryness...definitely a subdued smoke presence, and I like that. Light earthy hop bitterness on the middle and back of the tongue.

MF: Medium mouthfeel, moderate bitterness, creamy and smooth...lingering dryness.

O: Pleasant enough smoked porter, I think I enjoy this more than the Alaskan offering.

Served in a tulip glass.

Dark brown with a tan head that dispersed quickly that left little lacing.

Coffee and chocolate with a hint of smoke as it warmed up the smoke intensified.

Burnt coffee and chocolate up front with some bitterness in the middle and a light smokey finish.

Really never liked this beer in the past, I could not taste any smokiness in it. They had it on tap and decided to get a small glass of this to try it again and was happy that I did. It is a great beer.

Poured into some kind of beer pint glass. The color is black with a little amber at the edges. There is a thin light tan head.

The aroma is mildly sweet and chocolatey.

On tap Sonoma Pittsburgh. Pours mostly opaque deep brown Dark tan head with mild lacing

Puts off an aroma of bittersweet chocolate and coffee and a surprising tinge of citrus.

Flavors are bold and well balanced. Coffee, chocolate, slight toasty bitternes. Finishes clean and thick.

This beer is a mouthfull. Thick and well carbonated.

I had this one with veal bacon and potatos. Great beer. Really nice work. Might have trouble finishing more than two.
