Stone's Smoked Porter is a defiantly robust, thick roasted barley beer that incorporates healthy amounts of coffee, chocolate, smoke, and hop flavors into a well-balanced package. For the availability and price, if you want a hop-forward porter, this is one of the best versions I've had.

Beer is able to pour a >3cm head that is very light tan in color and composed of fine bubbles. As head descends over the course of a few minutes, it leaves excellent amounts of lacing spiderlike and honeycombed along sides of the glass. Body is dark brown to black, but when held to light, it reveals a dark amber or ruby highlight.

Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, vanilla, chocolate, and some smoke. All scents are detectable, quite nice overall, if it were a tad stronger aroma, this would be exceptional.

Opens with a chocolate sweetness and roasted malt flavor that hazes into a bit of smokiness and bitterness. Smokiness picks up mid-palate, but is not overwhelming, and complements the roasted malt, bitter hops, and mild coffee flavor of the porter excellently. Flavors then joined by some slight acrid bitterness, bordering on sourness, which is mildly noticeable, but definitely enjoyable. Hop presence exists throughout beer, bitter and slightly fruity, which is good, but perhaps too strong in a porter. Pleasant bitterness exists throughout beer, unsure if from use of hops or roasted malt, but it is good nonetheless. Aftertaste is of lingering bitterness, raw cacao, burnt coffee, and mild smokiness. Taste is very complex, I'm not capturing it all, but it is delicious.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied, and feels a bit sticky in the mouth. Carbonation is a bit low for the thickness of the body, could be a bit higher and still retain the smoothness and enhance the flow of the beer across the palate. Overall mouthfeel is is fairly smooth and creamy, but a bit higher carbonation would make this less stagnant.

Poured from a bottle and served in a tumbler pint. The beer pours a dark, vibrant brown color with a foamy, frothy pale-tan colored head that starts around an inch, but settles into a sparse filmy covering after a couple of minutes. Smells of molasses sweetness, smoke, coffee, and oak on the nose. Initial flavors of sweet molasses malt, smoke, and light roasted coffee, with a bitter overall tone that cleans the end of the palate. The beer is light and smooth in mouth, with a bitter hops, smokey, and coffee finish. The beer leaves a great lacing along the glass as you drink. The aftertaste has a slight linger, and the full, rich flavors and complex palate make this a great sipper.

A - Dark brown complexion with a tan head, decent lacing.

S - Very appealing to nose! Dark malts, coffee, and smooth caramel.

T - A nice smoked flavor paired with dark fruits, coffee, and very drinkable.

M - Rich and near perfect carbonation for a porter. Full body with an almost sticky taste.

O - This is yet another great brew from Stone. I was very pleased to see this available in a growler from my local store HopCity and will most likely fill it up again! Recommended for anyone seeking a solid, drinkable porter.

Poured into a pint glass. My beer of choice for the Super Bowl. Enjoyed with grapes, cheese, mango slices and macadamia nuts. Pours a dark brown color, When held to a light, looked reddish and clear with light getting through all over. BIG frothy head with excellent retention and average lacing.

Good smell of coffee and roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, coffee and a moderate amount of smokiness (not Alaskan Smoked Porter smokey). Very tasty, I drank the whole bottle and enjoyed every bit.

Mouthfeel is rich enough and smooth. No hint of alcohol or unpleasant aftertastes.

A solid Porter, great with food.

Poured into DFH Goblet. Very dark brown with light brown head. Decent retention and lacing.

Aroma offers raisins, tobacco, mild butter, light roast, mocha, and fruit cake. Nice layering of smells.

Taste offers up plenty of smoky deliciousness to complement dark fruits and coffee flavors. Floral hop profile comes through with mild bitterness.

Well bodied porter..nearly chewy with light carbonation.

Solid porter. Highly recommended.
