A: Very dark brown. Thick bubbly tan head takes a long while to dissipate.
S: Subtle roasty malt. Hints of chocolate
T: Some bitterness with lots of malt. Roasty flavor is present. Softens up as it warms.
M: Sits very well. Turns into a smooth bubbly cluster mass.

Overall a pretty good beer. I think the bottle I had may have been a little past it's prime and there was no freshness date. I would like to try a fresh one to see. I think it could be very good.

Appearance - Pours a dark, near black brown with reddish hue when/where light can penetrate. The tan head is a good 2 finger width, and hangs a bit before giving way to a fine, sticky lacing.

Smell - Roasted coffee and chocolate malt, but the smoke is the most prevalent force in the aroma. A bit of grain comes through in the nose as well.

Taste - Like how I would imagine a smoked porter to taste. Dark roasted coffee and rich chocolate malt flavors, accompanied by a deep, smokey backbone. There's just enough hoppiness to give this beer a slightly bitter bite, but not enough to detract from what this beer is all about. The smoke, at times, tends to mask the other flavors in this beer, but moreso before the beer warms.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, creamy and smooth.

Overall - This is good, and far from your average porter, but the smokiness can be a bit of a nuisance at times, detracting from the porter characteristics in the beer. It'd love to see what Stone could do with the Porter style in a non-smoked form, but alas, this is what they seem content to releasing as their year-round offering. Drink on the warmer side to allow the other flavors to blossom amongst the smokey overtones.

Poured from the pint bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance – Pours a deep brown almost black color with a slight amber hue to it. A decent sized head came from an aggressive pour, but left rather quickly. Pretty fair lacing.

Smell – Smokiness, roasted malts, a little caramel and chocolate. Pretty nice nose on this one.

Taste – The flavoring is good, follows the nose to a degree. The smokiness certainly imparts flavors to the brew, which in my opinion actually interfere with what is otherwise an excellent beer. A slight sweetness, not much at all, but the taste overall is more on the bitter side. I just didn’t like the balance of the beer.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, medium well carbonation.

Overall – This is a good brew to some, but I am more of a fan of the traditional porters, so this one caught me off guard a little. This is a great beer to try once, and If you are a big fan of the smoked porters then it would be recommended, but otherwise, there are better out there. Certainly try it though, I'm just not real keen on the smoked flavoring.

A - The beer poured a deep black in the center part of the glass and showed amber on the edges where the beer was not as thick across the glass. A one finger head sat on top of the beer but dissipated very quickly. Once the head dissipated, a thin veil of head residue and medium sized bubbles cover all but a halo, that sits slightly inside the edge of the glass.

S - I picked up a smokey sweetness. It reminds me of milk chocolate and bacon that is on the brink of burning. Great! I am stuffy today though, so I might revise this if I drink it on a day where I have less sinus blockage.

T - There is the very, very, very slightest first taste of sweetness, like a brown sugar, which is instantly over powered by the burnt bacon flavor, and finishes slightly bitter. The bitterness is much less than I expected compared to Arrogant Bastard and porters in general. I truly like the unique flavor, but I do not feel like I would pick this beer off the shelf again if I recalled my experience. As a dark beer fan, I find that there are more traditional flavored porters I prefer.

M - Very carbonated after being in your mouth for a second. Goes down silky smooth.

O - Good beer. I am happy to have tried it, but I probably will not be buying another one.
