Date: June 272015... Glassware: Victory no nick.... Occasion: a cold June night lingers on---with Game of Thrones to ponder and rue... Appearance: dark black, intimidating body that allows an equally ominous brown head that webs archways across the glass in artful fashion; a thick half-inch ring holds staunchly; walls of head blanket the glass as it drains.... Aroma: a soft, milky whisp of lactic activity; some chocolate, licorice and some citric hops, the usual Stone calling card.... Palate: smooth, sensibly sippable; medium-bodied, creamy and softly carbonated; a drinkable porter... .Taste: milky, chocolaty, but rather subdued in its profile, almost apologetic in its assertiveness; a malty finish ensures a pleasant, roasted profile...Overall: A smooth, mildly flavorful example of the style--not nearly as prolific as the bottle’s script proclaims...a welcome but unworthy follow-up to the Founders Breakfast Stout...

The aroma is hops, malts and hint of smoke. The flavor is smoke up front with an edge of hops that is balanced by the malts, chocolate being the dominate element of the malts along with a mild nuttiness. A complex porter, hoppier than most but makes it stands out.

Enjoy by *gasp* 12/15/12. I've literally had this bottle in my fridge for about two and a half years. I bought it when I first got serious about reviewing and I have no idea why it's taken this long to do so.

Appearance: Dark brown body with about half a finger of sudsy tan foam that has dissipated leaving lacing.

Aroma: Quite clean. Some cream and hints of woody smoke. I would think the smokey flavor, if any is left, would be very mild by now.

Taste: If I didn't know this was as old a bottle as it is, I probably wouldn't guess it. Let's talk hops first: they are quite aggressive. The first thing I notice is a building bitterness that hits its peak during the finish. There really isn't much for hop flavor but the character is all clean bitterness. The malt takes a back seat until the aftertaste when flavors of roasted barley and cream take over. The smoked malt flavor comes through at the beginning of each sip and then again in the aftertaste, but it is subtle. Nice depth of flavor for 5.9% ABV.

Mouthfeel: Between thin and medium in body, which is lighter than expected. The carbonation is a little overdone. Good drinkability for the style.

Final Thoughts: I was pretty nervous cracking this bomber open but the beer inside has aged well. Would I drink it again? Sure, next time I won't let it age.

22oz bomber. Pours dark chocolate brown with an amber hue. Smells like a traditional porter. Tastes like a traditional porter with a little smoke flavor. Little different. Would have liked a little more chocolate and toffee. Good. Just not great.

Stone Brewing 'Smoked Porter' @ 5.9% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $6.90
A-pour is a dark cola brown from the bottle to a near black in the glass with some ruby red at the bottom of the glass peeking thru a fine medium size off-white head leaving a streaky lace along the pint
S-some smoke
T-ok taste , some smokey bitterness on the swallow
MF-ok/decent carbonation , medium body
Ov-ok/good beer , just an ok porter

Aroma is fairly sweet, lightly chocolatey, with a touch of phenolic plastic and a bit of tar.

Flavor is more smoky and plasticy, with woody smoke notes becoming bitter chocolate at the finish. The bitter roast malt lingers. Becomes fairly harsh.

Terrible, just so bad. I had three sips and dumped it down the drain. One of the few beers I've had to get rid of. Stone is an over-hyped brewery and most of what they make are IPAs and pale ales that all taste the same. Avoid it if you can.

Nice smokey porter. Beautiful body. Nice creamy head, light lacing. Aroma of smoke, fruit and burnt malts. Taste is up front with that smokey sweetness that comes from a porter. Not heavy, nor boozy. Very light and drinkable. Good sh*t

Browish red.

Smells more stale than smoky. Like TCA cork taint in wine. (But let's assume it's not that in a crown capped 22oz bottle.)

Taste - meh. Nice bitterness. Not especially intense or interesting. Just on the edge of not wholesome. Not especially smoky.

Mouthfeel is fine. Not espcially rich. Nothing wrong with it.

Overall - tolerable but not worth buying again.

**Much better draft. Closer to a 4.0 beer**

On tap into a pint glass.

Foamy head that lasts, with considerable thick lacing. Looks great.

Aroma is pretty mild, at least with the beer as cold as it was served (too cold).

Taste is a combination of roasty flavors and smoke. Lots of smoke, maybe a bit too much. Very slightly tart.

- a little to foamy but a pitch black beer
- smell is all smokey from the roasted grains
-more of a mellow smoke in my opinion a nice traditional beer jerky flavor
-feel is way to light for this style for me just hoped it had the thick body to accompany the big smoke flavors
- overall a good beer to pair with bbq and anything smoked

I probably shouldn't rate this beer because I just really don't like "smoked" beers. The smoke in this one isn't overwhelming, but I'd still prefer it to be completely absent.

Wasn't overpowering on the smoke side of it... Just gave a nice subtle flavor to the otherwise terrific Porter. Liked it a lot.

Deep amber in color. Strong confrontation with the oaky bourbon smoked scents. The vanilla comes through first in taste, smokey toasty malts finish the palate. Great bear

Pours very dark brown which almost seems black color with a foamy 1-2 finger dark tan head that was full of bubbles and faded on the slower side, leaving very good lacing and rings as it went down.

Smells of smoked malt, charcoal and burning campfire wood up front, with burnt coffee, woody notes, cocoa powder, light peat moss, light vanilla or caramel, and just of whiff of floral hops. It is very smoky but somehow a sweetness manages to sneak through like the hops released some citrus fruit and the smoked malt let out some s’mores notes. All in all a very nice smoky nose.

As smoky as the aroma was, the flavor is more burnt malt and coffee, with nice chocolate, toffee, cocoa and smoky sweetness that has a sharp bitterness that seems as much piney or citrus hops as it does smoked malts. Along with the smoked malts/grains comes some herbal notes, grassy hops, light fruit, coffee beans (maybe even vanilla beans), syrup and faint licorice. It is not too smoky like drinking a campfire, it's nice and complex considering that it’s so malt dominant. In a role reversal the hops give the malt a nice backbone, and this is as tasty as I remember it from a few years back.

Mouthfeel is velvety smooth, with a light and almost watery flow that has a medium/lightly chewy body, light carbonation and an ashy bitter aftertaste that is smoky and full of coffee and cocoa powder notes. The finish is close to clean, but leave the smoky flavor lingering like a good cigar. Overall a really solid porter that is well priced and always tasty.
