from the bomber...pours very dark but not impenetrable black/brown with deep reddish tan highlights on the edges. great lacing after the vigorous pour.

nice malty caramel nose with a sense of creaminess. the smokiness is just a wisp...not overpowering.

it all comes together much nicer in the taste. very balanced but sharp smokiness, maltiness, caramel, full-bodied creaminess all kept bright with the perfect carbonation. little bit of background hops keep the sweetness down nicely.

at 5.9, it tastes right on and makes this quite a sessionable brew. two bombers over time with some hearty pub fare would be perfect.

Bomber poured into an Arrogant Bastard pint glass.

Appearance - Three full fingers of rootbeer brown head, even from a quiet pour. The head soon clumps and appears spotty, making the lacing hard to grade because of the whipped-cream-like noggin. The beer is fairly dark, appearing black under ill-lit circumstance. Taking it closer to the light yields a more dark maroon color.

Smell - Roasted peppers and a huge campfire waft of smoke. Smoky oats and barley float above a bit of chipotle pepper aroma. There is a bit of sweet honey to the nose as well, though it well-hidden.

Taste - Huge scores of roasted barley and burning wheat stalks. A very light chipotle pepper taste in the back of the throat. Mild bitterness lingers around with dark, chocolaty malt before the two become friends. Smoke coats the entire roof of the mouth, while the sweeter flavors play on the tongue beneath it. Drinking out of the bottle yields a sweeter molasses note.

Mouthfeel and Drinkability - Surprisingly tart on the tongue at first. The low abv allows for a smooth, smoky ride. Imagine coming home from a campfire, the smell of smoke on your clothes - smoking a cigarette after eaten a lightly hot pepper about ten minutes prior. That doesn't make much sense. But it sounds good right now so I'm gonna leave it in the review. Light on the palate, certainly not alcoholic, and easily sessionable. I want to have this out by the campfire.

A great dark pour, very nice muddy-tan head, and an awful lot of carbonation & lacing...the nose was subtle on smoliness i found, more present were some roasted malts & cocoa notes...the taste seemed more stout-like to me, some dark chocolates, roasted malts and rich creaminess...the smokiness creeped in subtley mid-sip and didn't overpower the other nice qualities of this beer....a nice coffee-bean bitterness lingered...mouthfeel was both lively and rich and offered up some creamy texture...great drinkability, complex enough to sit and sip but fresh & lively enough to consume at will...i thought it was well balanced and the subtle smokiness was plenty for this beer

Paid $3.99 for a 22oz. bomber...

The beer pours almost black with a medium sized white-ish tan head, excellent retention and a lines of lace onthe glass. The smell is bold, roasty, smokey and malty.

The taste is just a blast of flavor to the taste buds with all the flavors the smell gave away. Supurb mouthfeel due to the creamy head retention, one-of-a-kind. This is maybe the most drinkable porter out there with Bell's.

Final Thought: This is a creative brew by one of the world's best, this one is on the annual rotation, thank you Stone.

Stone Smoked Porter
22oz bomber
Recent brewing, ashed out 10/06
Medium pour in a pint glass.

Poured dark mahogony with a huge light brown fully lasting frothy head with excellent lacing.

Smelt of moderate mild chocolate, caramel, cola and molasses.

Taste was upfront moderate roasted bitterness and coffee with some sweet chocolate and burnt sugar tones and light piney hoppiness followed by a blend of strong smokiness, moderate sweet chocolate and cola, light piney hops bitterness on a long finish that reminds me of rootbeer or cola. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, creamy and silky, lively carbonated, and moderately astringent.

Overall, the beer looks great, smells good, and the taste is balanced to perfection and intensely complex on all its duration. Makes my neurons pop. Minor points off for slight lack of sweetness and weakness of aroma.

Had this beer sitting around for a month now figured It was a nice pairing with a Turkey Chili. Poured into my Sam Smith pint glass.

Appearance-Very dark brown with a few hints of red. Alot more carbonation than I thought, a pretty big 3 inch light brown head.

Smell-Upon first whiff got some dark chocolate. Definitely some dark fruits in there as well, as it warms you can get some hops, now I think I'm ready to give it a try.

Taste-The smoke definitely comes out in the first sip. With a slighty hoppy finish. About 30 seconds after the finish a smokiness is still resting on my tongue. Coffee and chocolate are present. Towards the end a real awkward numbess was on my tongue.

Mouthfeel-Very light and smooth. Alot of carbonation.

Overall-This is one of those Stone offerings I always walk by but never purchase. I think It may continue to stay that way. There were some things I liked, but some I didn't.

Popped open a bottle of this after a weekend of wedding planning and 10 hours worth of driving. It's been sitting in my fridge for a few months now, so I figured this would be a good time to crack this one, especially now that it's readily available in Georgia now.

Poured into my Boulevard chalice. Pours a dark brown. Looks a little watery and has almost no head at all.

Smells of dried fruit; prunes, raisins, bit of alcohol and roasted malts.

Tastes of roasted malts, a hint of raisins, almost port-like, but much more subdued.

A slightly watery mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

A pretty drinkable porter. Not my favorite style of beer but this is pretty exceptional.
