22 oz bomber pours a dark cola with good head and lacing. Aroma has a nice smokey nose with roasted coffee, vanilla, and light bacon. The taste really separates this one from other smoked porters - it has a wonderful smokey taste without being raspy. Slight hoppy bitterness balances things out without being overwhelming. Great easy-going mouthfeel reinforces the lack of smokey raspiness, with dry finish. I've had smoked porters that left me feeling like I'd been breathing in campfire smoke for hours on end but not this one! A very nice smoked porter.

Poured from a bottle into a dimpled mug.

A – Deep chocolate brown near black, and an aggressive pour yields a massive three finger head of thick beige foam. Looks awesome. Light/minimal lacing.

S – Mild aroma of toasted grains and campfire smoke. Not getting much else.

T – Much more flavorful and deep than the nose would indicate. While roasted barley flavor makes a strong presence, there are also nearly equal notes of smoke, caramel, coffee, dark fruits, and toffee. This is one rich and complex porter. Finish brings bitterness from both the burnt malt and an underlying hop base that while subdued, would be missed if it weren’t there. Amazing.

M – Medium bodied bordering on thick, with a delightful creaminess. Props to Stone for realizing that “porter” does not equal “thin and watery”. Finishes “wet”, with an aftertaste that carries.

O – Finally! A “smoked” beer that doesn’t clobber your taste buds with smokiness and nothing else. Finally! A deep and complex thick chewy porter that offers up a lot more than just burnt grain. World class. For comparison, I had an Alaskan Smoked Porter just days ago, and this blew it away. Another hit from Stone. Probably going to become my go-to porter.

A – Beer pours a very dark brown, almost black and opaque with a thick tan head.

S – The first smell this beer reminded me of was a smoked cheese, in a good way. It has a very smoky, malty scent with hints of chocolate.

T – A delicious roasted malt flavor comes through with the notes of chocolate, coffee and smoke. Has a slightly bitter bite to it.

M – The beer has a good medium body with the right amount of carbonation.

O – I had this delicious beer on tap at the Stone Brewing restaurant and it was definitely a highlight of the ones I sampled. It has a distinct flavor and worth enjoying again.

Finally got a chance to try this. Kept putting it off as I'm not a huge fan of porters. Only $4.95 at Gasbarro's!

Anyway, poured into a Red Hook sample glass. Very dark brown in color with a fast dissipating head. Smells terrific - roasted malt with a mild smokiness.

Nice, complex flavor. Tastes like it smells, though the smokiness comes out a little more. I think this would go very well with a beef brisket from LJs.

When I'm in the mood for a porter, this would be my first choice.

Poured down the middle of a standard pint glass. A very dark brown liquid, root beer-like color, with a big, dark tan head topping it. Head settles after a few minutes to a solid 1/2" carpet of foam, leaving decent lace behind.
Smell is malt, wet cardboard, some hops and even lighter smoke notes. Seems weaker and less balanced than I remember from some years back.
Taste is malt, hops, smoky beef jerky, teriyaki and wood. Better balance here.
Medium-bodied w ith a lightish effervescence. Drying from the middle through the finish. Slight warming aspect after the swallow.
Like the name says, this is one of my favorite styles. The memory of this brew is better than this tasting. I can't help thikn this recipe has been "adjusted" with more hops and less body than the last time I had it about 4 years back. I prefer the old recipe.

Stone's Smoked Porter is a defiantly robust, thick roasted barley beer that incorporates healthy amounts of coffee, chocolate, smoke, and hop flavors into a well-balanced package. For the availability and price, if you want a hop-forward porter, this is one of the best versions I've had.

Beer is able to pour a >3cm head that is very light tan in color and composed of fine bubbles. As head descends over the course of a few minutes, it leaves excellent amounts of lacing spiderlike and honeycombed along sides of the glass. Body is dark brown to black, but when held to light, it reveals a dark amber or ruby highlight.

Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, vanilla, chocolate, and some smoke. All scents are detectable, quite nice overall, if it were a tad stronger aroma, this would be exceptional.

Opens with a chocolate sweetness and roasted malt flavor that hazes into a bit of smokiness and bitterness. Smokiness picks up mid-palate, but is not overwhelming, and complements the roasted malt, bitter hops, and mild coffee flavor of the porter excellently. Flavors then joined by some slight acrid bitterness, bordering on sourness, which is mildly noticeable, but definitely enjoyable. Hop presence exists throughout beer, bitter and slightly fruity, which is good, but perhaps too strong in a porter. Pleasant bitterness exists throughout beer, unsure if from use of hops or roasted malt, but it is good nonetheless. Aftertaste is of lingering bitterness, raw cacao, burnt coffee, and mild smokiness. Taste is very complex, I'm not capturing it all, but it is delicious.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied, and feels a bit sticky in the mouth. Carbonation is a bit low for the thickness of the body, could be a bit higher and still retain the smoothness and enhance the flow of the beer across the palate. Overall mouthfeel is is fairly smooth and creamy, but a bit higher carbonation would make this less stagnant.
