Appearance - Pours a dark chocolate brown into my SA perfect pint with about two fingers of rich, mocha colored head that quickly dissipates leaving decent lacing.

Smell - Nice earthy smokiness immediately present in the nose. Followed by roasted malts and dark chocolate/cocoa.

Taste - I believe this is my first "smoked" porter, and I'll be damned if it doesn't taste like you got a piece of ash in your mouth, haha. A definite smoky quality to the beer which is intermixed with roasted malts, just a hint of bitter cocoa, and perhaps it's my imagination but some coffee.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, decent carbonation, creamy, smooth.

Drinkability - Relatively so. I need to let this beer warm up a bit more but as of now the jury is out. It is a good beer, and I do like a good porter. However, something about the style is just holding me back a bit. Still, I can't wait to try to Beer Geek Bacon beer that I have in the refrigerator. Should be interesting to compare the two!

A - Dark mahogany with a thick head that quickly sinks into the beer, leaving a ton of sticky lacing behind. Not much aroma, but a little malty chocolate and just a hint of smokiness. At first I didn't taste any smokiness at all in this one, so I was quite disappointed. Tasted like an average porter; roasted malt and a slight sweet chocolate flavor. However, as it warmed up a little, the smokiness started to emerge a little bit. The smoky flavor was still not as bold as I expected though, but that's not a bad thing. Excellent, full mouthfeel. Overall, not as bold as I expected, but a really well balanced porter, nonetheless.

From a bottle. Strong coffee and roasty dark malt aroma. Pours dark black with a thin, but creamy, mocha head that is mostly lasting. Strong bitter coffee flavors in the fore. never really gets smoky like a Rauch. More of a mild peat influence than anything. Very porterish mouthfeel that belies how stout-thick it looks sitting in the glass.

Appearance. Pours a deep brown with a creamy 1 finger off white head. Head sticks around and leaves a little lacing.

Smell. Roasty chocolate and campfire.

Taste. Roasty bitter coffee and chocolate, stirred with a half-burned campfire log. Lasting smokey bitterness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with some nice medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability. A pretty good drinker. Smokeyness is a little much at times, but still goes down pretty good.

Never had a smoked beer before. This one was a reasonable price, so here we are. Pours motor oil deep-brown-to-black, though with decent amount of fizz on the sides, head like root beer.

Smells like dark chocolate & raisin, maybe some licorice. Not sure what wood they smoked the grains with, and it's subtle, but it reminds me of a cross between oak and cherry. Enough sniffin'...

The dark fruit comes up much more on the swig than the nose, while chocolate still present though playing a surprising amount of background. Sweeter than I expected also. Doesn't go down as thick as I expected, surprisingly refreshing and mellow overall.

For something grabbed on a whim, the verdict is: freakishly delicious. I would buy a 40 of this if I could. Seriously.

Pours a deep dark maroon, almost black. Small thin head forms and disappears, no real lace.
Aroma of cocoa, coffee bean, chocolate, pine, minor citrus notes and an earthy mineral note.
Flavors of chocolate, coffee, butterscotch, moderate liquid smoke and some pine sap and citurs bitterness were noted.
Mouthfeel jumps to an espresso bitterness right away . Midway thorugh a scotch malt hit is detected that then switches to a heavily roasted, smoked finish.
Drinkability is relatively high, love to try this one with some spicy BBQ'ed ribs

I like porters, but had never had a "smoked" porter before.

This is a good, solid porter, and the smokiness I found to be a nice way to balance some of the typical sweetness you get with a nice, malty porter. The smoke and the hop finish each sip of the beer much more dry than one might expect for a porter, as well.

I will admit, I was concerned about the "smoked" aspect, but still wanted to try it. I am glad I did, but would likely spend my money on Arrogant Bastard again before this one.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark brown with a hint of red. No light gets in or out, as it's almost completely opaque. A dark tan head forms a finger thick and retains as a small cap.

Smell: Rich and malty, with a smokey undercurrent. A touch of coffee is hidden deep in the muck...

Taste: I was suprised by how relaxed this beer was. I was expecting a full taste-bud assault, but no... It's very smooth and rich, with a nice maltiness. Suggestions of coffee and chocolate are hidden in the dark fluid. The smokiness is quite restrained and minimal. There's a steady, but small, stream of sweetness that flows from the first sip to the last drop. Not much hop presence at all, just a ghost-like trail of bitterness that is easy to miss.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a 'just right' mouthfeel. The alcohol is extraordinarily well hidden. Finishes smooth...

Drinkability: Good stuff. The smoke hangs in the background, playing back-up to the malt flavor, instead of taking over and ruining it. Another solid ale from Stone.
