The aroma has an ironlike smokiness to it, with hints of citrusy hop. Dark dark brown.

The flavors in some order (changes sip to sip) - citrus hop; an oiliness similar to that found in an oatmeal stout; smoky maltiness; chocolatey maltiness; roasted coffee maltiness. Take the late, lamented Big Indian Porter, subtract some of the malt, add in hops & smoke, and you have this beer. This is NOT a bad thing at all. The finish is very nice - a little sweet, with some smoky-roasty-dry malt overtones.

Very dark pour, when held up to light it reveals mahogany hues. Nice off-white head that stays in it for the long haul. Great lacing, decorating the glass with each sip.
Smells of light smokiness, coffee, maltiness. Tastes of more smokiness, coffee flavors, roasty & toasty, good bbq beer. Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied, good carbonation, and semi-dry finish. Extremely drinkable.

A - Pours a deep brown with a creamy tan head.

S - A hint of smoke and cocoa.

T - The taste is creamy and smooth with just a hint of smoke that lingers through the finish.

M - This is very smooth tasting porter, not too busy, but VERY satisfying.

D - Very easy drinking, which to me means I could drink several of these during a night. I enjoyed my last bottle while enjoying some baby back ribs, which I highly recommend.

Appearance: pours a beautiful ruby red with a medium amount of carbonation. I love the color of this beer reminds me of arrogant Bastard but a little darker plenty of light coming through for a porter.
Aroma: big smoky peat overtones with the coffee and chocolate hiding in the back slight caramel as well.
Taste: follows the nose perfectly, also i slight milk sweetness on the finish.
Mouthfeel: nice medium body with medium carbonation.
Overall: great example of a smoked porter would buy again and can't wait to try the vanilla and chipotle versions

On-tap at Twain's in Atlanta.

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with moderate amounts of smokiness - char with hints of campfire. Also present are mild dark semi-sweet chocolate aromas.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Mildly dry roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by well-integrated smokiness. Moderate amounts of dark chocolate come into play midway through the sip. Hints of leafy hops come into play near the end of the sip before carrying through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall this beer was more smoky than I remembered however it still isn't robust enough given the ABV. Worth a shot to see for yourself but not worth seeking out.

I've never given the same score for all categories before. I guess this is just a good beer. Somehow the rating is better than I think the brew is. This is pretty constant for Stone Brewing stuff for me. The brewer does good quality but, with the exception of a couple of brews is a better marketing job than beer.

If you look up smoked porter in the dictionary this brew would be the picture next to it. It is OK and has the standard characteristics for the style but does not stand out.

A: Pours very dark with a 1.5"coffee like head, leaving some lace down the sides..

S: some smoke here with a sweet malty background. no hops

T: Chocolate, malty and plenty of smoke. Overall, pretty good the smoke is there, but its not overpowering. Very balanced but I am not a big smoke porter fan, but I can drink it.

M: Very smooth and medium body.

D: Very good Porter, has a pretty crisp taste to it, goes down pretty smooth.

Was happy to see Stone not going for the home run here with the hops, very balanced beer, again smoked porters are not my favorite of the style but I would drink it again.

Thought it was a tad pricey for 22oz $4.99 versus Anchor porter six pack 72 oz for $7.99, plus the anchor is more in my preference. Still its recommended.

Review from notes 3/11/11. Thanks to THECPJ for sharing this bottle.

A: Dark brown, mocha colored two finger head with nice lacing.

S: Some roasted malt, a little bit of chocolate, and a little bit of smoke.

T: Dark fruits, mostly raisins and some prunes, chocolate malt, and some coffee. There is a hint of hops in it as well.

M: Medium bodied with a rich/silky mouthfeel, which allows for very easy drinking.

O: A nice offering, was expecting a little more smoke on the flavor profile, but even without it, I enjoyed it. Love a Stone offering at a lower ABV.

On-tap @ The Moan and Dove on 3/4/07

AP: Black as night with a one finger deep, light brown head that dissipated rather quickly and almost totally dissapeared. not much lacing found on the glass.

Nose: Mild roasty malts, cream, dark chocolate, and an earthy and green hop scent way down deep.

Taste: Very roasty, oaked and oatie malt flavor with a smoked undercurrent and a very subtle earthy and leafy hop flavor underneath.

Feel: Medium body, not very big for the stlye, feels rather thin, light and crisp overall for the style.

DA: Surprisingly un-impressed with this one on-tap. Good stuff, but was well under my expextations for this brew on-tap. Easy enough to drink though.
