Yet another great brew from the people at Stone, who have yet to let me down and are now my all time favorite brewery. This one poures a very dark brown, almost black with a small head that leaves decent lace around the glass. The smell reminded me of the Arrogant Bastard Ale but with a hint of smoke, chocolate and coffee added to it. The taste is right on: little bit of hop bite at the beginning, then the smoked flavor comes in along with a hint of malt and chocolate, and finishes with a crisp coffee flavor. This one would go great with some bar-b-q'd burgurs....awesome brew!

Ok the second 22 0z bomber from Stone tonight.
Smoked porter? mmm sounds not very tasty..but lets see.
Well as with all Stone brews I have had so far this beer looks absolutlly great..deep mahogany brown beer..with some garnet accents when held to the light and on top a huge frothy tan head..great stuff.
Wow the aroma of this beer blew my mind..this is great stuff..roasted deep dark chocolate malts mixed with some great black coffee..and with a luxurious smokey smell below.
The taste is just as I described the aroma except I get that wondeful Stone creamieness..fantastic stuff.
Wonderful and smooth on the palate..with some great aftertatse.
A most drinkable porter indeed..I did not think I would like this "smoked" beer..but its just great.
I dunno whats happening to me but im becoming a Stone freak..god help me!

22 oz bomber, purchased in Boston and carried home to Florida. Hello, Greg Koch see what I go through just to enjoy your beer !
Deep dark brown or black color depending on your perspective of things. Fluffy, tan head. Full of soft hop bubbles that make you wonder how they do that. The smoke aroma was not the direct punch in the nose I expected. Instead, it was smooth, somewhat sublte, and very well placed. The smoke smell didn't dominate the traditional porter aromas of bitter roasted coffee. Taste was much the same. Smokiness was no where near dominate and let the subtle good porter flavors show through. Hints of creamy chocolate show through, or am I dreaming ? Wow what a tremendous beer. No where near as smoky as those August Schlenka Rauchbeers. Full bodied, very much inline with what you would expect from a porter. Supersmooth and well worth the wait to finally have some Stone Beers. I had this with a garlic roasted chicken, delicious combination.

Pours a dark almost black color with a nice tan head that has good retention and leaves wonderful lacing. Chocolate and burnt malt aroma with a hint of roastyness and bitter coffee. Same flavors intermingle with a smokey flavor. Quite velvety smooth on the palate and very drinkable. Love this beer in the winter sitting near a fire.

Absolutely amazing!!! This is everything I was hoping it would be and more!!. Black liquid with a khaki coloured, creamy head. Tiny carbonation bubbles cling to the side of my glass. Looked magnificent. The smell was incredible!! I have had a handful of things before with smoke in the title, only to be terribly disappointed to discover no smoke in either the smell or the taste. This had plenty of smoke, however, but just enough. I also got a little bit of a bready smell and some chocolate hiding in the back. Positively one of the best smelling beers I have had in a long time. The taste matched the smell with a nice "meaty" malt right up front and plenty of smoke. A small amount of caramel and burnt coffee make appearances toward the finish. Mouthfeel is very smooth with a fantastic level of carbonation. This beer is just amazing. I am thoroughly impressed, and sadened that this is not available in Ga.

This is a must try. I've only had a few smoked beers, and this one was one of the best so far. It was a dark color as expected from a porter, and a nice rich roasted and smoky flavor that was simply terrific.
The flavor was incredible. You could eat this with cheese, sausage, smoked oysters, steak, and it will just compliment it perfectly. It has a nice smoke flavor that is not just a hint, and not overdone--it was perfectly in balance with the hops and alcohol. The mouthfeel was smooth.
I liked this beer so much, I even bought a stone smoked porter glass. This is one I will eventually try and replicate as a homebrewer.

Poured from a bottle into a delirum snifter

A-Pours an extremly dark brown near black even aginst direct light its completely opaque good head and laceing throughout.
S-Wonderful, bold notes of hickory, esspresso, vinilla, and chocolate that all come through extremly clear
T-Again wonderful everything that the nose hints about this beer comes through in the flavor and just as bold the complexity it amazing and only outdone by the balance in the beer. Nice full body with a near perfect carbonation level for the style this is perhaps the best porter i have ever drank and would reach for it time and time again if i had the oppertunity.

This one is right up my alley. I'm a big fan of the dark side. This one is dark yet light bodied enough to enjoy it on a warm southern Illinois day.

A: Pours a deep mahogany with a tan head that dissipates leaving a persistent ring that laces well.

S: Damn this is nice. Smoky malt, a little chocolate and vanilla in the background, a bit of hops.

T: This one runs the gambit. Smoky, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, hops... This is incredible.

M: This feels like a medium body. Good carbonation. Not harsh at all.

D: Very easy to drink but I'd only want one per session. However, with the low ABV you could easily have more than one. I love this beer.

Apperance - Dark black with trances of tan. Thick, creamy 2 inch head and plenty of lacing.

Smell - Smoke, roasted malts, mild coffee and chocolate.

Taste - Roasted malts with coffee and chocolate start this beer off. Dark fruits provide a nice backbone. Alcohol is non existent.

Mouthfeel - A real treat, coats the palette nice with dark smokey afteraste. Nothing abouth this beer is overpowering, letting me enjoy each drink after drink. I meen, i can taste another beer if i choose, but really, i dont want anything else.

Drinkability - If i was told to make a list of 5 porters to drink , this would make it. It has everthing i look for. A great example of a smoked porter. Easy to drink, affordable price and great avaiblity. World class beer.

A: Very dark, almost black, thin head, very good lacing

S: You can definitely smell some chocolate, and can pick up some of the smoke smell

T: Very smooth porter, minimal hops, light smooth aftertaste which does not linger, biscuity. You can taste the smoke. A little bit of coffee and chocolate taste.

M: Medium body, medium carbonation

O: Love this one. One of the best porters I have had. Anytime I see this I will pick one up, it's that good. The taste is very unique. Really enjoyed this one.

Pours an almost opaque deep dark brown almost black with a frothy dark tan head that slowly diminishes to a thin layer and leaves decent lacing on the glass. The aroma was of smoked malt, burnt espresso and molasses. The taste is a wonderful blend of smoke, black malt, espresso, molasses, and a hint of dried fruits, wonderfully complex and not at all overbearing. The mouthfeel is a near perfect light medium bodied with low carbonation. This beer is the almost perfect accent to a chilly rainy evening.

This is a wonderful porter that is flavourful and has great body and character but is highly drinkable.

It's almost black, deep, reddish brown, with a big, dense, dark tan head and good lacing.

The taste is rich, deep, and complex, yet smooth. It has caramel, a nice coffee-chocolate quality and very faint hint of smokiness, giving a wonderful texture of sweetness and bitterness, with lasting, well-blended flavours. The feel is smooth, rich and a touch oily.

22 oz bomber poured into a snifter

A - Massive, dense deep tan head. Very uneven bubble size, with significant lacing. Astounding retention. Beer itself is about as dark as they come - near black, completely opaque. When held right up to a light some reddish brown comes through. Stellar.

S - Oak, coffee, chocolate cake, roasted almonds. Very complex.

T - Those nutty/oat/coffee notes from the nose are front and center here. Not so much in the way of sweetness, it's like a warm hug personified. Or drinkified. Whatever. Porters don't get much better.

MF/D - Smooth and creamy with a clean finish. Extremely drinkable while refusing to be simple.

Pours a reddish black with lots of bubbles witha carmamel head. Nose is of smoke and molasses. Taste is of faint smoke, malt, caramel, all with a faint background of char. This beer is surprisingly light on the palate. Excellent balance and great drinkability-one of my favorites in this category.

Poured a deep and dark brown/black, with a light brown head. The lacing remained thick and all over the glass. The smell is that of malts. The initial taste is roasted chocolate with a smokey/burnt finish. Smooth and thick feel with the perfect amount of carbonation makes this a lovely porter. This is definitely one of the best porters that I have tasted, will have to buy this again.

I don't normally drink a lot of porters because I prefer hoppy beers and generally think that porters/stouts aren't as complex. This beer made me change my mind. This porter has a very a very dynamic full body malt character. I liked the smoky coffee character. All together a great beer. I will be looking to try more of the same.

Pours a syrupy brown only to settle in the glass as super dark brown, nearly black, excellent lookin' porter. Firm thick, inch tall tannish cocoa colored head that fades slowly leaving hazy thin placed sheets of crispy looking lace all over the glass. Absolutely gorgeous!

Aroma is nice steady sweet chocolate/cocoa, very smooth, rich, and a great smokey richness of roasted deep chocolate and black malts. Even a slight coffeeness noted. Yum!

Taste is quite exceptional, excellently done of smooth sweet chocolate up front, tones of roastyness settle in quickly of smoked black malts. Rich, luscious, and a super interior hop bitterness of mild abode that picks up in the finish with some more roasty smokeyness and hoppy, earthed bitterness and slight dryness of coffee and twinged chocolate late. Good full feel, solid creamyness all through and an excellent lingering finish of slight smoke, what a shock; not.
The drinkability on this is amazing - smooth, rich, creamy, and easy. Thank goodness it comes in the 22oz bomber to help keep the glass full longer, at least for a little while anyway.

Big thanks to Gusler for the samples!!

Last week I paired a big bottle of this fine porter with some steaks that my mother-in-law grilled. It reinforced the meal nicely.

A-Beautiful, in the space where brown and black meet; one finger head, no lacing

S-Roasted malt, mild hops, chocolate, mesquite

T-BBQ meat smoked for some time, chocolate and coffee

M-Smooth, slight snap of bubbles

O-This will be a go to porter for me at any grilled red meat experience; the smoke action is really terrific, hats off to Stone for another great one

Look: Dark brown in color with a lighter ring of brown at the bottom of the glass. 1 inch tan foamy head and great retention some lace would have liked to see more

Smell: Coffee and bitter chocolate in the foreground and just a hint of smoke in the background

Taste: A nice amount of smoke upfront that reminds me of a campfire. The back end carries a nice amount of coffee and finishes with the perfect amount of bitter chocolate

Mouthfeel: Medium body and carbonation. Slightly dry on the finish

Overall: Probably the best "smoked" beer I have ever had and probably on the market. Right amount of smoke that blends perfectly with the other flavors.

wow! what can I say? this beer lives up to its name as it is pretty smoky in both senses of smell and taste. the look is reminiscent of a stout. the foamy head dissipates sooner rather than later, but that could depend on how cold/warm this porter is in room tempurature. in this case, I poured it into a frosted mug.

according to some, just the name porter gives a bitter aftertaste in mind. this is not the case at all. this exceptional porter actually is quite creamy smooth and sweet. it gives a full taste and goes down smoothly.

Deep ruby almost black yet clear body. Brown rocky head consisting of tiny and small bubbles. Good lace and retention.
The smell is wonderful sweet malt roasted and toasted to perfection. Chocolate and a little hop bitterness.
Taste is roasted coffee bean and semi sweet chocolate followed by a smokey mild hoppy aftertaste.
Very mellow and gentle mouthfeel. Smooth and full sturdy body leaving a good coating.
Session brew all over the place yet has so much personallity that it can easily stand on it's own. Amazing, simply amazing.

Wow...I mean wow, what a brew.

A: Everybody gets the appearance right on their Porter. Grading Porters on appearance? A Porter looks like a Porter, period. No one ever misses, not even A-B. (!)

S: Beautiful. Everything Porter.

T: Holy Hell, this thing is immense. One hell of a roller coaster ride between chocolate, coffee, vanilla bean, licorice, and a bunch of things that go by too fast to recognize properly. Big, complex, and mystifying.

M&D: Sublime. Enough said...session at will.

The best Porter I've ever had...eclispses the Alaskan Smoked Porter with ease. Wow.
