Near opaque black with brown/red highlights. Bossy head from an aggressive pour recedes leaving a nice tight 2mm dense head. SOme lace.

Smells of light floral hops, sweet malts: molasses, honey and brown sugar. Some tempting vegemite as well.

Taste: Whats this??? A Stone beer not cranked up to 11?? I've had to recalibrate. I generally brace myself on the first sip of one of Stone's beers with their aggresive and in your face (generally) hop inspired ales, and I did this time round. Needlessly. This is a (initially dissapointingly) subtle beer for Stone. But NOT a dissapointing one. Quite the contrary. Some gently sweet malts: more molasses and honey. Subtle veal stock/gravy notes, nice background smoke flavour. More delicious yeasty vegemite. The Stone hops are present and obvious, slightly floral and oily, but they are not the main act. This is balanced quite well, but a slight lack of roasted malt and/or hop bitterness for mine.

The body is medium, smooth but a little weak - medium carbonation adds a touch.

Drinkable? Yes. Rather.

Three smoked porters tasted side by side at Churchkey last night, regular, vanilla and chipotle. Served in a wine glass.

Beer is black / dark brown with a thin broken head of brown tiny bubbles that leaves minimal lacing on the glass. Carbonation is low, they all three looked exactly the same.

Aroma is mildly smoky and roasty, smells really nice.

Beer is medium bodied and has this mild sweetness to start and finishes out with a some nice roast and mild smoke. I really enjoyed this beer and the elaborations on the beer with the different flavors.

22oz. bomber ($3.99 @ Bottle King in Hillsdale!) poured into a pint glass.

Pours black with ruby highlights and about two fingers worth of tan head that leaves behind gobs of lacing. Smells pleasantly roasty and lightly smoky with some chocolate. Tastes much like the smell; smokiness dominates while roasted malts and chocolate provide a solid backbone. The smokiness dominates initially but slowly yields to a roasty flavor that itself dominates by the finish. Good mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Drinkability is good, I feel the smokiness builds and may be a bit overpowering after a few. This beer is a good, solid beer that I'd certainly recommend.

Was glad to hear the Wegman's in State College, PA started carrying beer, so I grabbed this while I was there and poured it into my pint glass...

This is simply chocolate thrown into a damn campfire!

A: Brown in color, but light for a porter. Looks more like a dark brown ale. When held up to the light, this has a nice red/cola color that looks real nice. The head is a three finger dark khaki and very creamy and lasts a long time.

S: Smell is phenomenal for the style. Let me first start by saying that this smells like a bonfire. Very woody and smokey, just as this is advertised. There is also a lot of chocolate and a tad cigarette smell in the nose also. Very complex smell, also with some dark cocoa and roast as well.

T: I usually go into these beers thinking that there will be a lack of smoke or woody flavors, but this one really lives up to the expectations. This one is extremely smokey, just like a campfire. It is a bit light in body, but still has nice chocolate and light cocoa flavors as well that make up for that.

Overall, this is a great smoked porter. It is not heavy or thick, but has a lot of smoke, chocolate, and cocoa flavors that get the job done.

Pours from a bomber a very dark brown aproaching black with a tight off white/tan head.

Very Slight smoke on the nose. (Maybe I just got too used to Schlenkerla). Almost more of a peaty smokiness than a wood quality. Chocolate and roasted malts.

This is a very good American Porter but not really a smoked beer in my opinion, and I guess acording to others opinions judging by it's listed category. Not as bitter as I was bracing myself for in the Stone tradition. However it is very well balanced and quite a noble example if I must say.

very clean and well structured just not as pleasing as some other favorites of mine.
