Never had a smoked beer before. This one was a reasonable price, so here we are. Pours motor oil deep-brown-to-black, though with decent amount of fizz on the sides, head like root beer.
Smells like dark chocolate & raisin, maybe some licorice. Not sure what wood they smoked the grains with, and it's subtle, but it reminds me of a cross between oak and cherry. Enough sniffin'...
The dark fruit comes up much more on the swig than the nose, while chocolate still present though playing a surprising amount of background. Sweeter than I expected also. Doesn't go down as thick as I expected, surprisingly refreshing and mellow overall.
For something grabbed on a whim, the verdict is: freakishly delicious. I would buy a 40 of this if I could. Seriously.

22 oz bomber pours a dark cola with good head and lacing. Aroma has a nice smokey nose with roasted coffee, vanilla, and light bacon. The taste really separates this one from other smoked porters - it has a wonderful smokey taste without being raspy. Slight hoppy bitterness balances things out without being overwhelming. Great easy-going mouthfeel reinforces the lack of smokey raspiness, with dry finish. I've had smoked porters that left me feeling like I'd been breathing in campfire smoke for hours on end but not this one! A very nice smoked porter.

Poured from a bottle into a dimpled mug.
A – Deep chocolate brown near black, and an aggressive pour yields a massive three finger head of thick beige foam. Looks awesome. Light/minimal lacing.
S – Mild aroma of toasted grains and campfire smoke. Not getting much else.
T – Much more flavorful and deep than the nose would indicate. While roasted barley flavor makes a strong presence, there are also nearly equal notes of smoke, caramel, coffee, dark fruits, and toffee. This is one rich and complex porter. Finish brings bitterness from both the burnt malt and an underlying hop base that while subdued, would be missed if it weren’t there. Amazing.
M – Medium bodied bordering on thick, with a delightful creaminess. Props to Stone for realizing that “porter” does not equal “thin and watery”. Finishes “wet”, with an aftertaste that carries.
O – Finally! A “smoked” beer that doesn’t clobber your taste buds with smokiness and nothing else. Finally! A deep and complex thick chewy porter that offers up a lot more than just burnt grain. World class. For comparison, I had an Alaskan Smoked Porter just days ago, and this blew it away. Another hit from Stone. Probably going to become my go-to porter.

Look – 4, Smell – 4.5, Taste – 4.5, Feel – 4, Overall – 4.5
A – Beer pours a very dark brown, almost black and opaque with a thick tan head.
S – The first smell this beer reminded me of was a smoked cheese, in a good way. It has a very smoky, malty scent with hints of chocolate.
T – A delicious roasted malt flavor comes through with the notes of chocolate, coffee and smoke. Has a slightly bitter bite to it.
M – The beer has a good medium body with the right amount of carbonation.
O – I had this delicious beer on tap at the Stone Brewing restaurant and it was definitely a highlight of the ones I sampled. It has a distinct flavor and worth enjoying again.

Finally got a chance to try this. Kept putting it off as I'm not a huge fan of porters. Only $4.95 at Gasbarro's!
Anyway, poured into a Red Hook sample glass. Very dark brown in color with a fast dissipating head. Smells terrific - roasted malt with a mild smokiness.
Nice, complex flavor. Tastes like it smells, though the smokiness comes out a little more. I think this would go very well with a beef brisket from LJs.
When I'm in the mood for a porter, this would be my first choice.
