Stone Brewing 'Smoked Porter' @ 5.9% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $6.90
A-pour is a dark cola brown from the bottle to a near black in the glass with some ruby red at the bottom of the glass peeking thru a fine medium size off-white head leaving a streaky lace along the pint
S-some smoke
T-ok taste , some smokey bitterness on the swallow
MF-ok/decent carbonation , medium body
Ov-ok/good beer , just an ok porter

Aroma is fairly sweet, lightly chocolatey, with a touch of phenolic plastic and a bit of tar.

Flavor is more smoky and plasticy, with woody smoke notes becoming bitter chocolate at the finish. The bitter roast malt lingers. Becomes fairly harsh.

Terrible, just so bad. I had three sips and dumped it down the drain. One of the few beers I've had to get rid of. Stone is an over-hyped brewery and most of what they make are IPAs and pale ales that all taste the same. Avoid it if you can.

Nice smokey porter. Beautiful body. Nice creamy head, light lacing. Aroma of smoke, fruit and burnt malts. Taste is up front with that smokey sweetness that comes from a porter. Not heavy, nor boozy. Very light and drinkable. Good sh*t

Browish red.

Smells more stale than smoky. Like TCA cork taint in wine. (But let's assume it's not that in a crown capped 22oz bottle.)

Taste - meh. Nice bitterness. Not especially intense or interesting. Just on the edge of not wholesome. Not especially smoky.

Mouthfeel is fine. Not espcially rich. Nothing wrong with it.

Overall - tolerable but not worth buying again.

**Much better draft. Closer to a 4.0 beer**

On tap into a pint glass.

Foamy head that lasts, with considerable thick lacing. Looks great.

Aroma is pretty mild, at least with the beer as cold as it was served (too cold).

Taste is a combination of roasty flavors and smoke. Lots of smoke, maybe a bit too much. Very slightly tart.

- a little to foamy but a pitch black beer
- smell is all smokey from the roasted grains
-more of a mellow smoke in my opinion a nice traditional beer jerky flavor
-feel is way to light for this style for me just hoped it had the thick body to accompany the big smoke flavors
- overall a good beer to pair with bbq and anything smoked

I probably shouldn't rate this beer because I just really don't like "smoked" beers. The smoke in this one isn't overwhelming, but I'd still prefer it to be completely absent.

Deep amber in color. Strong confrontation with the oaky bourbon smoked scents. The vanilla comes through first in taste, smokey toasty malts finish the palate. Great bear

Pours very dark brown which almost seems black color with a foamy 1-2 finger dark tan head that was full of bubbles and faded on the slower side, leaving very good lacing and rings as it went down.

Smells of smoked malt, charcoal and burning campfire wood up front, with burnt coffee, woody notes, cocoa powder, light peat moss, light vanilla or caramel, and just of whiff of floral hops. It is very smoky but somehow a sweetness manages to sneak through like the hops released some citrus fruit and the smoked malt let out some s’mores notes. All in all a very nice smoky nose.

As smoky as the aroma was, the flavor is more burnt malt and coffee, with nice chocolate, toffee, cocoa and smoky sweetness that has a sharp bitterness that seems as much piney or citrus hops as it does smoked malts. Along with the smoked malts/grains comes some herbal notes, grassy hops, light fruit, coffee beans (maybe even vanilla beans), syrup and faint licorice. It is not too smoky like drinking a campfire, it's nice and complex considering that it’s so malt dominant. In a role reversal the hops give the malt a nice backbone, and this is as tasty as I remember it from a few years back.

Mouthfeel is velvety smooth, with a light and almost watery flow that has a medium/lightly chewy body, light carbonation and an ashy bitter aftertaste that is smoky and full of coffee and cocoa powder notes. The finish is close to clean, but leave the smoky flavor lingering like a good cigar. Overall a really solid porter that is well priced and always tasty.

Look: Dark black, not much head and not that great head retention either.
Smell: The floral notes from the hops are really showing here. There is some smell of smokiness, but not as much as I would have thought.
Taste: hoppy, really malty and a bit smoky. Floral notes are still presented strongly here.
Feel: Light-medium body. Some floral and bitter taste lingering around your taste bud.
Overall: A really great beer, and I'll surely get it again. I would rather call it Smoked IPA than a smoked porter though.

A 22 ounce bomber poured into a Nonic/Imperial pint glass (this beer deserves it).

Appearance - Dark ruby red color. Big, dense, tan, lumpy head. Mondo stickage. Despite the dark color, the clarity is amazing. Awesome!

Smell - Malty. Smokey (no surprise there).

Taste - Big malt. Smokey (again, no surprise). This beer has an acidic black coffee flavor (which is great because I love the flavor of strong black coffee). There is a touch of sweet that works well with the aforementioned bold flavors. As if all that weren't enough, the hops are also vying for your attention.

Mouth - Oily. Slick.

Overall - In the past, I've been a little biased against Stone ales (some of their ales are overly hoppy and their marketing campaign is a little obnoxious). Smoked Porter, however, is a winner. What's most impressive about this beer is that, despite the big flavor, it's still relatively smooth (as a fine Porter should be). Yet another bold and wonderful California ale!

This may be an unfair comparison but having lived in Bamberg, Germany which is home to two very good smoked beers, This porter was very much like Spezial Rauch Bier in that is slightly lighter in both color and feel. However, I preferred the heft and taste as well as the dark color of the Schenkerla Rauch Bier. This beer was very close to Spezial.

Pours a dark brown with thin bubbly light brown head. Smoke aroma very prominent. Smoke also appears in the taste, which lingers around. Overall very solid beeer and is exactly as stated, no tricks here. A good smoked porter.

Picked up a big boy of this offering, had it poured into a stout glass. The color was a dark, dark brown with lots of tan head and lacing. The body of this beer is probably its strongest suit. The taste and smell were coffee and roasted malt, but not as strong as I was hoping for. Good, but not great.

Pours a dark brown Ruby with an off white head that mostly dissipates which leaves some lacing.

Nose has some chocolate, malt, and slight smoke

Taste follows nose and finishes with some bitterness.

A - Pours extremely dark ruby red, looks black unless you hold it to extreme light. Forms a nice finger of creamy head with nice whispy lacing.
S - Notes of malts, slight chocolate, coffee and a smoke that blends with the coffee.
T - Malts, touch of hops, black coffee, very dark chocolate with a very bitter after taste. Very delicious but I'm not finding much smoke even though it is a smoked porter.
O - A nice, strong sipping beer.
V - Medium.

At first glance this beer is black and foreboding. A closer examination shows it's really a deep, dark brown with some underlying crimson. The head is a frothy off-white finger of foam that stuck around for a good while. In time, some splotchy lacing remains, as well as a thin cream coating on the surface. A classic porter profile marries with smoke to create an interesting metallic aroma. Reminiscent of a burnt bread slice from the toaster. Faint chocolate notes and trace hops are present too. Very earthy. The flavor is a tasty mix of roast and sweet dark chocolate. There's a nice bitter kick in the finish with a distinct smokiness that lingers. You can almost breathe it in. The texture of the brew is pretty average. Medium mouthfeel with lively but controlled carbonation. Just right. Not overly complex, or potent, but discernible as a porter or light stout with some added flair. It leans toward the bitter, dry end of the spectrum, but never approaches puckering or unpleasant. I've had other porters that are silkier and more balanced, but this delivers in all the right ways for a smoked beer. Quite delicious.

The smoke overpowers everything at first but as I let it warm up chocolate malts blend well and subdue the smoke into a nice balance. My second in this style and looking forward to more. This one mixes nicely with rye whiskey, too! Just sayin.

This beer pours a a nice deep brown/black and with a nice root beer colored head. The smoke comes through on the nose, as do roasts and a touch of malt. Smoke comes across on the taste as well. The roasts really come across though. Not overpowering, but at a nice level.

A nice beer, a good solid drink. It seems a little different than most Stone beers I have had, but that is not a bad thing.

Pretty bland, not a whole lot of interesting characteristics. Considering it is made by Stone, you kinda sip down wondering if you're just missing something, expecting it to maybe come out a bit more as it warms, but it never happens. This might be one of the most "meh" beers I have ever had and by far the worst Stone. Tastes more like Miller or Budweiser attempted to make C.D.A.

Enjoy by 1/22/15. 22oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a deep brown with auburn hues; fluffy tan head that leaves great retention and sticky lacing. Looks great. The aromas surprisingly have hints of citrus. I'm picking up some orange peel. Chocolate malts are there. The smoke is there, but seems subtle and not as smokey as expected. The flavors have lots of smokey aspects, but it's balanced. Tons of cocoa malts. Lots of grains. More citrus notes. There's a little hop bite. There's a nice bitterness, but it's not overpowering. Some dark fruits. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very smooth and creamy. Easy to drink. It really opens up as it warms.

This is a solid porter. It's not my favorite example of the style, but it's still impressive. I personally like their vanilla variant better though. It's good stuff, but not elite. It's still one of those classic brews everyone should try if they haven't already.

Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into a Lawson's tulip.

a: Black, clear ruby when seen through light. Half finger thick tan head receded to thin surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Mild dark and caramel malt.

t: Big smoke up front followed by an almost equally big hop bite. Sweet to dry finish.

m: Smooth mediumn, plenty of carbonation tingle.

o; Sure lives up to its name! Smoke in abundance, perhaps the strongest of any similar type. A most enjoyable sipper. Have had their Vanilla bean version and enjoyed that, but this one packs an amazing smoky wallup.
