Pours a nice red/orange. Nice half inch of head, decent head and lace retention.

The smell starts with caramel and citrus which is quickly followed by the smoked oak. Some mineral and pine notes are also present.

The taste is pretty fantastic. Caramel and smoked oak are right up front. Citrus and a hint of booze make up the middle. The finish has a nice bitter grass and lemon rind. Very nice. Goes down smooth with just a tad too much carbonation.

I love this version of Old Guardian. I hope I can find one to drop in the cellar.

Clear reddish amber colored ale with a medium sized tan colored head.

Smells of fruit and smoke, mostly plum and melon with some banana. Smells slightly medicinal with a calamine/band-aid phenol smell. Vanilla and oak are in this but the other smells are stronger.

Starts out sweet and smoky with a big melon flavor. fairly boozy it is a bit like dry scotch. Tastes like grilled melon. Bitterness is on the high side.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall interesting but the bitterness is on the harsh side.

A - Poured hard into a tulip, yielded 2 fingers of off-white head, with decent retention. Lacing is pretty crazy on this beer. Color wise, it's a deep copper, with amber highlights. Very thick looking, and inviting.

S - Hint of woody malt and apple flavors up front, touch of smokey wood, some caramel sweetness and a highlight of hops. Aroma is interesting, and constantly shifting subtly. Great beer for smellin

T - Hmm... Strong hops up front, underlined with a smokey, meat flavor, and sweet malt behind. Alcohol comes through pretty strong, but compliments the hops and strong smoke flavor. Not very balanced, a little messy to be honest. But not without it's charm. Personally, I'm unsure if the oak-smoking was a good idea. Seems like it's going too many directions at once.

M - Thick and soupy, good for the style. Good level of carbonation, a little too warm though. Definitely leaves your mouth coated

O - A good barleywine, but not one of the best around. I feel like it's just got too much happening at once and none of it seems to balance out. Try it once, but don't buy a case

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. 2013 Odd year release.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles and a little floating sediment. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A big sweet malty aroma with big hints of smoked malt and oak. The smoked malt jumps out and is fairly strong but doesn't dominate. Hints of oak chips and wood. Sweet toasty malts with hints of caramel, toffee, biscuit, grain, and yeast. Slight hint of anise spice with the smoke. Some brown sugar hints. Solid hop presence with hints of grass, pine, and citrus orange peel and lemon. Also some hints of dark fruits with fig, date, cherry, raisin, and prune. A nicely complex and good smell.

Taste: Like it smells, a big complex taste of sweet malts, hops, smoke, and oak. Big smoked malt and oak chip wood taste that is assertive but blends in well. Sweet toasted malts with a big taste of caramel, toffee, grain, biscuit, and yeast. Brown sugar and a little candy sugar. A little anise spice. Good mix of hops with notes of earthy grass, pine, and citrus orange and lemon. Undertones of dark fruit with notes of fig, cherry, raisin, dates, and prune. Alcohol taste is noticeable but subtle. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full, rich body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and slightly chewy. Alcohol heat is there but light. Pretty smooth for such a big complex beer.

Overall: A really good twist on the regular Old Guardian. The smoke and oak give an assertive kick without overshadowing the malts and hops.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. This pours a mahogany color with a mid sized tab head and has longer than expected retention considering how high the ABV. The smells are of sweetness, vanilla, a little caramel. The feel is a little thickish. The taste is good, very high hops which I wasn't expecting, vanilla, caramel, some sweetness. This is way better than the regular.

22oz bottle poured into a 25oz snifer, pours a deep bronze with some ruby hues when held to light. Nice fluffy tan head fades leaving chunky lacing down the glass. Sweet and smoky aroma with caramel, oak, earth, booze. Tastes are well balanced with caramel, burnt caramel, oak, smoke, earthy chinook hops, pine, booze - but for 11.4% it's pretty smooth; the smoke lingers with the bitter pine. Full body, nice carbonation. Overall, I think I prefer a regular Old guardian but this was a very well done recreation with excellent utilization of smoked malt.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a reddish/copper color with about an inch light tan head that stayed around for a long time. There's also a lot of lacing. The aroma is nice, it smells mostly like smoked malt/meats, and there's also some cherry, caramel and oak noticeable, too. It tastes like smoked malt/meats, caramel, oak, citrusy and pine hops, toffee, bready malt, and a bit of booze, chocolate and cherry cough syrup. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's coating and creamy with moderate carbonation. Drinks pretty easy for an 11.4% ABV beer. I'm a fan of this brew, I'll have to pick up another bottle soon. A pretty good deal for $7.99 a bottle.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish.

Poured into DFH snifter, formed a 1/2" orangey tan head over the cloudy reddish copper brew. Head holds on well, with heavy lasting lace. Aroma is smoke and alcohol, both ample, as I would hope and expect.

Taste is sweet to start, substantial smoke in the middle, alcohol through the close, although a bit fusel for me. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is alright. Maybe this one will go down a bit easier as warmth takes over, but even if not, still a nice brew. Always like a beer that is labelled smoke and HAS smoke.

Bomber poured into an oversized snifter. Great looking pour, rusty deep amber with a long lasting head and an impressive amount of lacing dropped beginning way up at the top of the widemouthed glassware.

Smells... wow, chiefly of meaty smoke, booze and little else. I started sampling this out of the fridge and continued to do so right up til room temperature. Regardless of temperature, the smoked malt completely overwhelms the absolutely massive sweet malt backbone and colossal hop flavor profile to a degree that I wouldn't have thought possible. To its credit, this stuff has the fierce dose of bitterness and thickish body are close to what I've come to expect from Old Guardian, but the amount of smoked malt in the recipe goes far beyond what I would consider complementary to the base beer.
