After really enjoying Double Bastard some time ago, it is time to review its single version. I have had this many times on tap but never reviewed it. Here goes.
A - Pours a deep ruby brown with a one finger tan head. It appears almost hazy in the glass.
S - Lots of big malt scent in the aroma, with a nice hoppy overtone. There is an earthy, citrust aspect of the aroma as well, most likely due to the hops.
T - Very very hoppy upfront, with some bitterness and grapefruit in the middle. Finishes sweet and malty. This has a very heavy, bready taste most likely due to the maltiness. I think it is both very malty and very hoppy but also nicely balanced between the two. Reminds me of a very hoppy red ale, like Southern Tier's excellent Big Red.
M - This one seems to have a heavy body and moderate carbonation. Nice and chewy almost.
D - I don't know how I ever used to get through pitchers of this while in school. Packs a punch, but is a nice treat once in a while. It does go down easily for such a high abv beer, but it seems heavy in my stomach as well.
This is a great and unique beer. If you like this definitely try the Oaked and Double versions, both were excellent.

A-Dark amber/copper color. Very clear. A light brown head that dissipates leaving a bit of lacing.
S- Pine, roasted malts, pine, caramel, and pine. Did I say pine?
T- Piney hops and bitter. This gives way to/is balanced by some roasted malts.
M- Medium with a decent amount of carbonation. Very smooth going down.
O- Finally tried this classic. Glad I did. If you like a hoppy/bitter ale this one is for you.
