22oz bottle with the intimidating gargoyle informing me of my lack of worthiness. Perhaps I'm not. As I attempt this oft-spoken-of beer for the first time, I lack the confidence to conquer the 22 ounces.
Pours deep drimson red with 1-2 fingers thick creamy foam. Perhaps brewed with the blood of its victims?
Nice malty fresh pine smell. Its all blended together, nothing particularly jumps out and hits you, but its pleasing. Some breadiness.
String grassy, piney, taste, loads of malt. Very complex. Caramel about 3/4s of the way through. Complicated, but not overbearing. I begin to sense victory.
Low to medium carbonation in the mouthfeel. A strange bitterness lingers and is the takeaway - a different taste than I have experienced before.
More drinkable than I was expecting to say. Though perhaps I am not worthy, I enjoyed this beer, and would come back to it...in due time.
Till we meet again
