Awww man! Crackin one of these takes me back to my College days over 10 years now. Amazing!
Well bombs away!
A: Appearance is a deep lush amber color with awesome clarity and some rich mahogany undertones that really redden in the light. Nice tight fitting cap of a dirty tan head and loads of lace.
S: Smells of light roasty malts and yeasty breads that give way to a nice piney and floral hop aroma.
T: Warm roasty malts, caramel, slightly nutty, rich bread flavors are balanced very nicely by a sharp hop bitterness that brings a nice peppery spice and earthiness to the beer. It really lends itself to oak well and I think the oaked version is in fact even better. Bitterness dries out the finish and it definitely warms up a bit for sure.
A brew like nothing else out there really. I mean maybe Rogue DeadGuy comes close but this is way hoppier.
M: Incredibly smooth and creamy with a slight richness to it that clings to the palate.
D: Decent really. I am tempted to sip on this one but the body is so smooth it is proving to be difficult. If you are in to big beers with big flavors I would highly recommend.
To me the AB is a definite pioneer in the craft brew industry and Stonebrew would not be who they are with out it. Flagship really. I mean what do you even label it...An American Strong? An Imperial Amber? An AltAle lol. I can totally see this brew as being offensive to the loyal BMC drinker. I have even tested this theory with friends in fact. Big fan. I love homebrewing the clone and have had amazing success. Even further surprised by the simplicity of the recipe but it all really comes together nicely. Cheers!
