Okay, everyone's had it but me -- time to remedy that. Never heard of an American Strong Ale, guess I'll just have to judge somewhere between an Old Ale and a Barleywine.

A -- Poured into my Rodenbach snifter: Clear, deep cherry reddish with a dense, light tan head.

S -- Estery fruitiness -- peach-like, caramel malts back, no hops. Light peppery alcohol in the finish. Earthiness with warming.

T -- Rich, chewy caramel maltiness up front that blends into a very spicy, resinous hop flavor. Dried fruit characters in between; not quite vinous -- very smooth. Some cardboard-like oxidation at the finish along with toasted bread characters. Aftertaste is a mellow balance of the toastiness and spicy, resinous -- almost vegetal hops. Some leathery, woody characters with warming.

M -- Mouthfeel is surprisingly crisp and rather spritzy with a medium to light-heavy body.

O -- A decent strong ale. More akin to an Old Ale than anything, but drier than I look for. I wish it had a touch more sweetness to its fruit esters and caramel flavors. It just seems to be a little off-balance somehow.
