Clear rich mahogany in color. Light beige 1" head settles slowly to an incomplete rocky cap leaving nice lacing.

Nose is very well-balanced mixture of rich bready/caramelly malt and piney hops. Some earthy notes develop as it warms adding more complexity. Very nice.

Less well-balanced on the palate. The malt is there, but its fighting for its life against the hops. It holds its own into the midpalate, but then the piney, citric hops take over. The finish is very long and bitter, but its a quality, smooth bitterness.

Very good slightly creamy soft carbonation helps keep the hops in check. Surprisingly drinkable for style.

22 oz bottle poured into Weizen Glass.

A - Powerful, gorgeous looking beer. Dark reddish brown, with some carbonation noticeable at the bottom. Poured a very thick, tannish colored head. Head shrunk slightly, but remain prominent at all times. Thick, good looking residuals left behind.

S - Lot's going on. Up front there's a lot of malt, some caramel, and lot's of spices. Difficult to put a finger on them, so we'll just call it "spicy". When warmed a bit, I noted a bit of a roasty smell, similar to a bock.

T - The great thing about the Bastard brews is how much is going on in the taste department. Up front, there's a lot of malt, notes of caramel, lot's of spice. I could really notice the spices in the aftertaste, which is delicious. Almost a light red pepper taste, very nice. As with the aroma, some cocoa and roasty flavors. Alcohol slightly noticeable when warmed. This is one of my favorite beers because like I said, there is so much going on flavor wise, but they all compliment each other so well, and nothing is out of place.

F - Good thickness, carbonation is felt. Not dry at all, which I like. Can really feel the spice in the aftertaste.

O - A damn good beer, that's all that needs to be said. I highly recommend this brew.

Poured from a bomber into a Sam Adams pint.

A: Pours a clear, dark copper orange with one finger of pale tan, billowy head. Good retention and lace.

S: Good dose of sweet malt with distinct citrus poking through.

T: Leads with the citrusy hops, but then the malt swells underneath with caramel and toffee, on the dry side (unlike the aromas) but not too much. Finish is long with the hops (now more pine than citrus) winning in the end.

M: Medium mouthfeel, pretty creamy, slight astringence.

O: I enjoyed this a lot, and would buy it often if only Stone would distribute in Iowa. Definitely one to seek out on the occasional road trip to Illinois.

First time trying this one. Bought a 22ouncer, love the bottle. Pours beautiful mahogony amber red color. Has ample carbonation with a good deal of bubbles rising to the top. The head is about two fingers wide, tan and very creamy. The head is so creamy, in fact, that it sticks around to the bottom of the glass, something that I have witnessed seldom. There is a good deal of Belgian lace that clings thickly to the glass throughout.

The aroma is subtle and hard to pinpoint, but is very pleasant. The first taste, full of creamy foam is wonderful. The abv is somewhat apparent throughout with a strong alcohol flavor, but definitely not overwhelming. The mouthfeel is tingly on the roof of the mouth with ample carbonation and hop flavor. This is a very drinkable beer and is not for everyone, like the label says, "You are not worthy".
