American Strong Ale. A very diverse style of beer. In fact, malt varieties and hops are different for every beer in this category. Never had the Stone's ASA until not, but I'm glad that I did. Here goes:
A: Nice. Dark amber with a decent head. Beer produces lots of lacing indicating a high protein content.
S: Quite good. Obvious presence of west-coast hops, but the beer is balanced by a nice malt backbone consisting of heavily-kilned amber and caramel malts.
T: Very good. Quite complex, actually. One initially tastes the amber and caramel malts, which are nice and sweet (toffee, caramel and dark candy), but these are quickly replaced by the hops on the way down the throat. A very robust, lemony, resiny grapefruit taste is felt at the back on the tongue, and this lingers long after swallowing. Don't get me wrong; while the hops are predominant, this is a very, very balanced beer. Malt complemented by a strong hop backbone.
M: Excellent. Lots of carbonation, perfect balance.
O: A very good beer and a flagship of the American Strong Ale style. I highly recommend it.
