Poured aggressively from a 22oz. brown bomber into a pint glass. Couldn't find a date on the bottle, but there was a code: "NJ0 03" lightly etched in the back of the bottle near the base of the neck, presumably a batch number.

I've already had the Double Bastard, but never tried this one, so I'm going backwards I guess.

A: First, the typical Stone hilarious shenanigans on the back of the bottle, making fun of macro breweries, defining arrogance, and talking about how you're tasteless and not worthy of drinking this beer, because you're probably an average macro beer lover and have not been prepared for this beer, thus you won't like it.

Crimson in color, indisputably very dark almost blood red with red/orange highlights. No cloudiness or sediment, although it's dark enough to be about 90% opaque. Four fingers of thick creamy khaki-colored head with bubbles so small and tight as to be nearly invisible. It looks like light brown whipped cream. Insane retention, and very thick and creamy lacing. A solid finger of head still left 5 minutes after the pour.

S: Fruity aroma, not quite as aromatic as I'd hoped, but it's close to perfect in aromatic strength. Nose is dark fruits and semi sweet floral hops. Not a huge amount of depth to the nose, but leaves me curious. Has a strange bit of a wet dog kind of smell in there which is a little off putting.

T: The flavor doesn't match up with the nose very much. After taking in the aroma, I was expecting it to taste a bit different, I expected more fruitiness and sweetness. The flavor isn't bad though, but not really what you might expect after smelling it.

Starts off with some in-your-face bitterness and dry hops, mid palate has notes of sweet molasses with hints of dark fruit and oaty malts, finishes bittersweet and semi-dry leaving a fruity yet bitter aftertaste. It certainly isn't unpleasant and it has a unique character, but a little too bitter and dry on the finish, and has some astringency. The flavor is not as complex as its big brother Double Bastard.

M: Nice and full, high gravity, lighter carbonation that does leave a tingly feeling all over the mouth for quite some time, sticky and chewy, but it does leave some astringency behind and a bit of grittiness and dryness. I'd say this is a bit fuller than the Double Bastard, but feels a bit harsher and drier.

O: Overall, very drinkable though a bit on the bitter and astringent side. The dryness and bitterness might be good for some, but it's a bit overdone for my palate. Yet, it is somehow still enjoyable for me, and it also comes with a significantly reduced price tag as compared to its big brother.

Worth trying, and there are some good aspects to this beer, although there are some negative aspects as well. Will I buy it again? Probably not, but not because it's a bad beer (it's an overall pretty good beer), but because there are cheaper beers that I enjoy a little more. I'd certainly drink it again if if given the opportunity to not pay $6 for a bomber.

If you're looking for an excellent Stone experience, pass this one up and pay another $1 - $2 for the Double.
