22 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.
I’ve enjoyed Stone’s standard Imperial Russian Stout without being gaga for it. There’s been
a licorice undercurrent to it that’s curled my toes in a not-necessarily-good way. My hope was that the concentrated coffee component in the Espresso IRS would temper the tanginess of the original.
A - Pours the same impenetrable black with the same luscious tan head as its predecessor. The head gives way to a nice lacy halo.
S - Coffee notes dominate the bouquet, overpowering the chocolate and anise notes I've noted in the original.
T - First sip yields a brilliant balance of coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla extract, with just a smattering of dried fruits and toffee. Sweet and full-bodied. Espresso RIS does tempers the tang to create a fine dessert stout. Takes some time for the alcohol to catch up with you.
M - Thick mouthfeel of – well – an espresso, but it’s still totally drinkable.
I had to halt myself from gulping down all 22 oz. in the space of 90 minutes. I walk past the Stone bottles all too often, but this brew can stand with massive limited stout releases like KBS or Parabola. Glad I still have a second bottle for a few months from now.

I happened to find four of these a few days. I am very glad I did because it is very inexpensive and already has a year on it. The espresso is probably a bit muted because of the age but it blends very well together. Some vanilla flavors as well as chocolate mix very well with the obvious espresso. I enjoyed this more than the regular stone RIS and I can't wait to open another bottle in 6 months.
