Pours a jet black color with a short dense khaki head. Typical RIS appearance.

Nice roasted aroma with a light tart berry kick. Some lactose and light coffee. Disappointed in the "espresso" aroma.

Strong roast flavor, toasted nuts. Flavorful coffee with a good range of wood and nuts and dark cocoa. Nice lactose flavor mellows the roast. The woody/nutty flavor really comes through in the finish. Dark caramel sweetness slightly scorched.

The feel is well bodied with a active carbonation. Sweet caramel on the palate which gets smashed but the roasted bitterness. Slightly sticky. Good espresso feel.

Tasty stout, wish there was more to the aroma. Good espresso flavor.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: A rather thin mocha head sits atop the pitch black liquid, even after a somewhat hard pour; not much staying power, though there a more than a few dots of lace left behind on the chalice

Smell: I was expecting more coffee but this is really fruity, with prunes and dates interspersed with chocolate and coffee tones

Taste: Fruitier, too, on the palate than what I was expecting, with prune and date flavors forward pushing into the bitterness brought from the hops (it is a Stone, of course) and coffee; underneath, chocolate and coffee underpin the flavor profile with a bit of lactose softening the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation and some warmth in the gullet

Overall: Quite different from what I was expecting and the bitter hop flavors were a bit of a distraction for me; good, but there are other coffee stouts I prefer more

Poured from 22 oz. bottle to an imperial pint. Bottled on 3/28/2013.

A: Very dark chocolate brown in color, nearly opaque. Thick, tall, foamy head that is cocoa-copper in color.

S: Vanilla bean, espresso, plum, cocoa, and white pepper.

T: Plum, chocolate, a strong vanilla flavor, espresso. Candy sugar finish with a bite of alcohol and pepper. A tad unbalanced and not quite as coffee flavored as I expected.

M: Medium-bodied. Dry finish. A little chunky.

O: Fell short of my expectations. I taste a stronger vanilla flavor than I do any espresso or coffee flavor. It's a good beer, but I prefer the (non-Espresso) Stone Imperial Russian Stout over this version.
