P: Pours a pitch Black Sea capped with a billowing espresso froth. Dense and great retention.

S: Roasted pecans glazed with brown sugar and molasses. Dark chocolate, rye bread, dried wheat grain and play dough. Swirling really releases the sweet bourbon aroma.

T/M: Sweet succulent confectionary sugar, brown sugar, molasses, dark fruits are up first. Followed closely by bitter spicy rye, cinnamon, roasted pecan praline and a grainy earth tone to round out the mix. Bourbon swirls around dodging in and out coming and going. After the spicy carbonation slows its attack the mouthfeel and taste is similar to melted Dutch chocolate. Vanilla bean, no bake cookies and old wood. Subtly prickly thick n chewy body.

O: This makes me want to relax under a blanket on a cold day and watch "Stand By Me". Great warming sensation created by the boozy bourbon and decadent pecan praline. Spices mellow out the sweet and craft a beautiful beer. Gordie Lachance would have approved of this intoxicating collaboration.

Half a finger of head foam, black body. It's a stout.

Smells of whiskey and rye. Is that a song lyric?

Fairly boozy even after nearly a year past the bottle date. Nuts are hardly used in stouts and these are to the beer's benefit. The whiskey barrel, the pecans, booze and rye make for a rough profile. Bitter chocolate/tobacco whips the back of the tongue. If anything I could do without the rye. I do not like rye beers.

Weight may be a tad heavy even for the style.

22oz bottle into snifter. Bottled 7/16/13.

A: Pours near black with a rather thin dark brown head that faded into a faint collar.
S: Smooth and decadent smelling with notes of rich chocolate, mild bourbon barrel, and spicy rye. Not boozy or overbearing in the least.
T: Mellow notes of bourbon barrel, toasted and creamy marshmallow, and a slight nuttiness which, me knowing its pecans, does kinda remind me of sweet pecan pie. Caramel, butterscotch, and molasses are sweet up front, and the finish is full of brown sugar, spicy rye, toast, chocolate syrup, and oak. Rich chocolate and spice linger long after the swallow.
M: Definitely the best part of this beer. I'm starting to notice that Stone's stouts are extremely soft, thick, fluffy, smooth, full and drinkable. Carbonation is soft and velvety; body is thick and fluffy and the mouthfeel is chewy, light and airy. Drinks very well, no trace of booze.
O: Drinks very well, could maybe even be smoother with age. Great flavor, exceptional mouthfeel. Well done.

Imperial Stout

APPEARANCE: Pours a romantic dark chocolate. Very opaque but not quite a jet black, still some nice brown hues in there. Very nice caramel colored head that had very nice retention.

AROMA: Smells like pecan pie that has been soaked in bourbon. Which equals deliciousness. Getting some sweetness maybe molasses and raisins. Little faint vanilla and for sure pick up the booziness from the bourbon barrel.

TASTE: Very flamboyant, layers upon layers. Right off the bat getting that nice barrel flavor. Slight spiciness that balances well with the sweetness of the chocolate and pecan. As it warmed a bit I pull out tobacco and the alcohol began to show its head.

MOUTHFEEL: medium bodied and medium carbonation. Slightly oily perhaps from the pecans. Not a super thick beer but surprisingly creamy.

OVERALL: Super solid stout from Stone. Was impressed all around. I am curious to see how this ages. Very easily drinking high ABV stout.

RATING: 4.3/5 Zombie Heads!
