Poured into a goblet jet black with a foamy beige head atop.Vanilla/bourbon and nuttiness stood out on the palate along with raisin and sweet alcohol.A big chewy feel is fitting for this beer.Bourbon and raisin flavors upfront with a roasted element always there,an earthy nuttiness brings good balance.The alcohol is big but it's a nice last one of the night sipper.

A - black as night, dark cream coffee head,

S - malt forward, nutty, earthy, vanilla, bourbon

T - caramel, pumpernickel, tad too boozy. I get more pecan flavor as it gets warmer, get a nice, bitter hop touch on the finish. I agree that this one gets better by the time you reach the bottom of the bottle, you're content.

M - definitely thick and vicious, but still a tad thin for aged bourbon when I compare to others

O - Looking forward to aging one, I have a theory nutty beers age well, plus dat abv....

Thanks, Mike! All kind of light absorption happening here, this beer is pretty much black as can be with a deep and contoured, mocha-colored head that sits at a half inch for a few moments then slowly sizzles to a thick collar and thin ring. Only a few spots of splotchy lacing on the glass; probably the least impressive lacing of any Stone beer I've had to date... Oh, no!

Good chocolate malt on the nose with some hints of roast, a light sweetness, a touch of cream, and a bit of nuttiness that peaks near the finish. I don't smell much wheat or rye, probably because of the intensity of the chocolate/roasted malts. The barrel is light on the nose, as is the bourbon, but then again, the beer is only 25% barrel-aged; sure, it's muzzled, but it's actually integrated really well into the rest of the aromas.

I love the smooth and creamy mouth feel that w00tstout exhibits; it fits perfectly with the light, sweet cream and mildly roasty, chocolate malts that attack the palate first. There's a good bit of nuttiness, even stronger than on the nose, and a solid pounding of oak and light vanilla from that barrel, baby. It may only be 25% BA, but don't call it a comeback, it feels like it has been here for years, brah.

There's some alcoholic heat present, but it's not too hot or abrasive, and it doesn't have much of a "bourbon" flavor, rather it's just boozy warmth. At 13% ABV, though, that's to be expected. It actually tastes a little lighter than that. Dry and roasty finish with a hint of dying cocoa sweetness and boozy wood. A final prickle in the back of the throat that hurts so good. Halfway through the bomber you can start to feel your toes tingle.

Very solid "partially barrel aged" beer, here. Stone makes some good stouts, as evidenced by their IRS and especially by the newer Espresso IRS. w00tstout is another solid stout offering from the guys in California, though maybe not quite as refined as the previously mentioned beers. Being able to find something like this just sitting on the shelves is certainly a nice treat, though.

A: A jet black beer with a persistent, espresso colored head. Pours with three fingers of foam and leaves ropes of fine lacing on the glass.

S: A blend of aromas with a medium amount of roasted grains, oak barrel, pecan and malt sweetness. The typical chocolate, coffee, roast and a light sweetness blend some dark stone fruit. There is some banana coming in probably from the bourbon mixed with the oak which has a fair amount vanilla along with a bit of cinnamon. There is a non-distinct somewhat nut like aroma in there. There is a moderately-low floral note from the alcohol.

T: A chocolate and nutty flavored stout with support from a moderate vanilla oak and bourbon character. The pecan flavor is fair noticeable at a moderate level. A medium-strong malt sweetness being somewhat wheat and slightly caramel in nature with a medium roast. With only a light hops bitterness the balance is fairly sweet. There are some light vanilla and background cinnamon flavors from the oak along with some light bourbon character. The alcohol brings some heat and a light sweetness. The finish is moderately sweet with an aftertaste of coffee, chocolate along with roast and light hops bitterness.

M: A full bodied beer with a medium level of carbonation and some alcohol warmth.

O: A rich and complex stout layered with oak, bourbon and a nutty character. The wheat isn't obvious at first but it defiantly there if you look for it and adds a lot to the body and character of the beer.

A: Black with minimal head retention and almost no lacing.

S: I got a little bit of the pecan, mocha chocolate, and not much heat considering the ABV.

T: Definitely taste the wheat, which is integrated well with the nutty, chocolate roasted malts. A little rye on the finish, and not too boozy.

M: Medium to low carbonation, lasting finish, and just a little syrupy.

O: Another winner from Stone. Great combination of flavors and definitely smooth for 13%. I'll be making a trip back to my local beer shop to grab more before they're gone.

I like where this beer is going. It is worth a try now, but I think it will be great and worthy of a 4.25+ rating in 6 months to a year. Consumed from a snifter.

Very interesting beer

A - Pours dark brown. Very little head from this pour. Looks a little watery, but sticks to the side of the glass quite a bit.

S - Slightly metallic. Undeniably stout smell with some unique properties: bitter and nutty. Reminds me of breakfast for some reason when I take a whiff. Not quite enough coffee to call it coffee, but smells like there could be some brewing in the next room or something.

T - Similar to the smell. Bitter, and you definitely taste the alcohol. Bourbon is present and at the forefront along with a mixed bag of nuts. A little bit of metal. Toasted bread comes to mind with a little Nutella. A good, solid stout.

M - This is made for sipping. Slight sting in the nose when it hits the sides and tip of your tongue. Falls to the bottom of my mouth instead of flowing over the top of my tongue. Maybe the taste forced me to do that.

O - I really like where this stout is headed. It isn't quite there yet, but could be with some cellaring. I bought 4 bottles. I will hold on to 2 of them to see how they age. I would love to update this review in another 6 months to 1 year. The flavors are all there. Bourbon, nuts, sugar, whiskey, oats... just needs some time to figure out its identity. I would recommend this to any Stout lover, and recommend they get a bottle to hold on to.

LOOK: Deep darkness that draws your soul in, tan sea foam lacing on top

SMELL: Creamy, nutty, cordial, sweetened coffee, faint vanilla, burnt sugar, spicy alcohol

TASTE: Smooth, thick creamy body, slick, roasted grain, faint wood, hint of vanilla, nutty, very warming alcohol, brown sugar, black currants, boozy, dates, semi-sweet roasty finish

Great job guys, Stone and their collaborators built a bit of a masterpiece here.

Bomber, with the bottling date on the neck, 6-2013.

This one must go in a snifter, preferably with a piece of decedant chocolate cake or ooey-gooey something or another...

Pours black and thick, with a quickly departing dark tan head, that leaves a decent collar, minor tiny bubble film and some minor bits of lace.

On the tongue, dark chocolate motor oil comes to mind, notes of vanilla, sugar glazed nuts, rum, cafe au lait and more dark chocolate come to mind.

Rich, dense,smooth, robust, complex, highly enjoyable Imperial stout.

Tastes/drinks great right now. Quality candidate for aging.

Stone Farking Wheaton W00tstout opens to a thick, mealy head, yeasty rising whole wheat dough, thick black breads, heavy molasses, pecans, vanilla, charred bourbon barrels, pepper, chocolate, tobacco, ash, and toffee blending with a mélange of fig, black cherry, prune, plum, raisin, blood orange, and date fruit esters, as well as a nice lacing of pine resin and grapefruit from the hops, the aromas rising so thickly out of the bottle that they almost take on a viscous quality and coat the nasal passages like oil. The flavors are potent, yet extremely delicately balanced, the notes playing off each other like a classical symphony into which a bit of bourbon-soaked heavy metal guitar has been infused. The result is a near-perfect Imperial Stout nose, certainly offering everything this reviewer could possibly want, and it’s hard to imagine anything else shoved in here without the bottle shattering under the pressure.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a stunningly beautiful alcoholic whang of cherry, fig, prune, plum, raisin, blood orange, and black cherry fruit esters, mixed with a plug of bourbon, and set atop a bed of brown breads, whole wheat dough, peppery rye, tobacco, ash, pecans, molasses, and heavy cream. Touches of bitter pine resin and faint hints of dandelion stem and grapefruit rind add more bitterness, mixing well with the pepper and ash. The flavors barely fade over the course of subsequent sips, though the raisin and bourbon notes do increase a little, but for the most part the beer maintains its strength throughout the bottle. The 13% ABV is present, but blends well with the bourbon, and is certainly less potent than in many of its peers. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, with even more whole wheat dough, ash, and yeast, and lingers for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this officially ranks as one of the five best beers—much less Imperial Stouts—I’ve ever had, and if Stone made this year-round, I don’t know that I would need to buy anything else. If you love Imperial Stouts, you must try this one: it’s stunningly balanced, immensely flavorful, and obviously the product of people who not only really, really love beer, but really, really know what they’re doing.

Jet black in color with minimal carbonation and what there was had almost an orange amber hue. This looks a bit intimidating. No light will penetrate this. I mainly smell that bourbon, but also the pecans. Just a hint of the wheat.mouthfeel is silky but thick. Bourbon mainly on the front of the palate. I then get that wheat and pecans. I get the warmth of the alcohol in the Back of the palate. The pecan and wheat tend to linger in the aftertaste. This is pretty unique and I would highly recommend it. Probably better shared. 22oz's at 13%!

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottled on 06/25/13.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brownish black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of deep tan head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A rich, sweet, and dark roasty malt forward aroma with big chocolate hints and subtle barrel hints. Dark roasted barley malts with big hints of cocoa, dark chocolate, and coffee. Hints of burnt toast, biscuit, wheat grains, caramel, toffee, rye, and some nutty hints from the pecan. Subtle barrel hints of sweet vanilla, oak, and bourbon. Sweet hints of molasses along with some anise spice. Slight hint of coconut. Subtle dark fruit hints of prune, plum, and raisin. Mild earthy hop hints. A very solid stout aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a big sweet taste of dark chocolate malt notes, barrel notes, fruit, and booze. Rich dark roasted barley malts with a strong taste of dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, and coffee bean. Notes of bready burnt toast, wheat grains, biscuit, burnt caramel, toffee, rye spice, and pecan nuts. Barrel notes come through with some vanilla, oak, and bourbon. A considerable presence of molasses sweetness. Subtle notes of anise spice and coconut. Undertones of dark fruit with notes of plum, prune, raisin, and fig. Very light hop presence. Noticeable alcohol taste. Very good.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and somewhat syrupy. Pretty hot with the alcohol presence at 13%. Still fairly smooth.

Overall: Another great stout from Stone. Big and nicely complex with some interesting subtle elements. Cool collaboration.

Snagged a 22 oz. bomber at Shirley's in Adams Morgan, D.C.

Appearance (4.25/5): Deep black, opaque, and very little head, as you'd expect with a beer of extremely high alcohol content (13%). The khaki, half finger head dissipates quickly. The carbonation is visibly low.

Smell (4.5/5): Some alcohol, dark chocolate, coffee, dark fruits in the nose. Not detecting much bourbon notes.

Taste (5/5): Wow, this one just blew me away. Vanilla from the oak and some bourbon flavors mix seamlessly with the usual, pronounced dark chocolate, and coffee flavors. Amazing depth and complexity. Dark fruits also make an appearance (think plum and raisins), reminding me of Belgian Quadrupels. A tad boozy but you don't get it until the very end. The flavor elements all work in concert together. More oaky vanilla in the beginning and more bourbony in the late stages as it warms.

Mouthfeel (4.5/5): Thick but not syrupy. Beautifully done body that's heavy but not cloying. Low carbonation due to the high alcohol. This is a sipper.

Overall (4.5/5): Stone has really crafted a winner of a collab beer with the Stone/Farking/Wheaton w00tstout. All of the ingredients and flavors mesh really well. Totally decadent, this is a beer you may want to share. Getting through the entire bottle on your own may land you on your ass, but I'd understand if you guard it jealously and elect to not share.

A- This beer pours a inky jet black body with an oily sheet that boils to a thin ring of big bubbles and a few random bubbles gliding up the sides.

S- The sniff of banana bread with out much banana in it gives way to an earthy black malt and barrel hint in the finish.

T- The mellow thick dark wheat malt notes lead to a brassy barrel flavor in the finish. There is some rye spice and dark fruit notes that come through as it warms and an alcohol bite that lingers into a black roasted malt bitter note aftertaste.

M- The full oily mouthfeel has a gentle fizz but is cut nicely with a warming alcohol heat.

O- The thick dense mouthfeel and alcohol work well together but the malt character just can't hold its own, so it is a little much to finish a full 22 oz.

Poured a deep black, with a thin tan head, that turned to a tan ring, leaving little lacing. Quite nice, very much like a barrel-aged stout. Scents of cocoa, coffee, slight soy sauce, slight alcohol, and slight nuttiness. A good scent for an imperial stout, what I look for in the style. Flavor begins with some nice Bourbon flavors, moves along into dark chocolate, and coffee notes, a sweetness is present throughout, there are some slight pecan and nutty hints, especially on the finish and aftertaste, alcohol is present throughout, the beer ends on roast malt, with a roast malt and black coffee aftertaste. As it warms it changes character a bit. Flavors of alcohol become more pronounced, and the typical stout character of roast malt, black coffee and dark chocolate become more pronounced as well. The nuttiness takes a backseat and is masked heavily by the alcohol, but it still slightly shines in the aftertaste, though overshadowed by roast malt. There are also some slight prune and plum notes as it warms. An excellent flavor profile, with a great deal of complexity. The flavors blend magically and the two slightly different flavor profiles on display each have their own charm. Mouthfeel is thick bodied with moderate carbonation and a slight alcohol burn when cold. This burn changes to a more pronounced alcohol burn, quite noticeable in fact, as the beer warms. Both mouthfeels are quite nice, though they make the beer very much a sipper. An excellent imperial stout. It has a high level of complexity in flavor and a nice, boozy character that makes it an excellent beer to sip and savor. Highly recommended.

A - Pours a thick, viscous black, with a caramel-colored & short head, that lingers well.
The head also leaves spotty lacing on the glass with each sip, but hangs around for a good amount of time.

S - Somewhat muted, even though the beer has warmed a good bit. First off, BOOZE. Lots, and lots of booze, although not a bad thing in this case. Black malts and whiskey notes are apparent, as well as nips of vanilla from the barrel.

T - Rich and tasty! The barrel-aging hits right up front, showing notes of cocoa, bourbon, fig, and a little bit of nutty sweetness, that I chalk up to the Pecans.
The Rye shows up late to the party, as a nice peppery bite at the very end of the finish, that lingers on with the warmth from the alcohol in the beer. NICE!

M - Velvety, smooth, and deceptive, this beer tickles the tongue.The carbonation serves only to help push the tasty mass of flavor across your palate, and in no way overpowers the sheer awesomeness of this artful masterpiece. A damn fine beer.

O - A great find, and a wonderful collaboration (AGAIN!) from Stone, Fark, & Wil...

8.5 oz pour into a goblet.

A: Pours black with a minimal tan head that sticks around for a while. Leaves some lacing on the sides.

S: Roasted malt and dark fruits hit you upon first whiff. Bourbon notes on the tail end. Bit of sweetness to it, as it warms a more pronounced carmel and molasses comes out.

T: Molasses and sweet carmel are the first thing I notice. Dark fruits add sweetness. Pecans do come through providing some nuttiness. Bourbon is noticeable at the end adding some booziness.

M: Medium to thick body with a sticky characteristic. Low carbonation. Not one your going to slam down.

Overall a fairly sweet and boozy stout with a complex flavor.

Poured from bomber into snifter

A - Nice black pour with caramel colored head , not much though. Lacing was nicd and lingering

S - Roastiness, some chocolate, a little vanilla and a hint of the bourbon seeps out. Don't get ant rye in the nose

T - Strangely enough, it took the second glass to really get flavors to come through. At first, only got the roasty,bitter chocolate taste but on the second time around the rye(though not overly pronounced) and some nuttiness came through nicely. Really got some bourbon flavor going on this time around. A little woodiness as well. The warmth from the alcohol breaks through too.

M - This brew is definitely on the medium to heavy end, almost a syrupy mouthfeel. Very little carbonation.

O - this beer needs a bit more age on it. I had to try it at first but I would hope the nuttiness would peek a little more with some age. It was good but I hope this will only get better.

22oz bomber, thoughtfully procured for me by the good doktorzee from sunny SoCal. I can profess to know of at least 2 of the 3 collaborators here - is that good enough in this instance, Stone? And it is indeed cool to see BA quoted on the very cap that I am currently popping.

This beer pours a very solid, and rather highlight-free black abyss, with two fat fingers of dense, thickly creamy chocolate milk head, which leaves a solid swooping array of rain shower cloud lace around the glass as it quite lazily abates.

It smells of bittersweet (leaning towards the former) chocolate pudding, roasted caramel malt, my dad's annual birthday pecan pie, a further edgy, spicy rye whisky graininess, soft cafe au lait, and a subtle vanillan-heavy oaken woodiness. The taste is big and over the top malty - woody caramel/vanilla, chocolate-coated toffee, reduced demarara sugar, boozy, spicy bourbon, more understated sweetened coffee, with an indistinct, but still readily pleasant southern nuttiness (somehow I'm reminded of Fox Mulder staring at a slice of pie in a diner), and weak earthy, leafy hops. Little to no alcohol warming manifests, astoundingly.

The carbonation is rather laid back, the body a hefty medium-full weight, and generically smooth, what with everything else apparently not going on. It finishes still quite sweet, but in a verily moderated sense - whiskey, multifaceted sugar, cocoa, and overburdened hops all jockeying for position. I'm sure it's clear who wins out overall.

For such an adjunct-heavy endeavour (in the most appreciable manner), things just turn out a-ok, don't they? Big and malty, chocolaty, and Kentucky whiskey friendly, without any real astringency from the booze. So, a generally over the top offering from a few rock stars in the brewing and brewing-adjacent space. Glad to have had the opportunity to try it.

On tap-TapHouse Westmont. Pitch black pour with minimal mocha head.

Smells of wheat malt, bourbon, chocolate and roasted pecans.

Taste of vanilla, roast and chocolate. Malt sweetness. Alcohol heat in the guise of bourbon lays heavy with a nice bite of hop.

Mouthfeel is complex and heavy. A lot of depth to contemplate on. The rye really dries this up.

Can someone say Goose Island Bourbon County cousin. You gotta love bourbon to appreciate this. Some may say too much heat or it has to age to mellow. Like BCS, I like to drink hot and this is right up my alley. Lacks that silky quality that keeps it from being topnotch. Nonetheless a quality beer every bourbon fan to try should it come your way.

Appearance - Pours thick and syrupy from the bottle, leaving in the glass a near black brew with cola brown edging. Dark tan finger width head with fair retention, then gives way to spotty blotches of suds before eventually leaving a barren surface.

Smell - Pecan nuttiness is evident, as is the bourbon element. Typical stout aromas (roasted malt and the like) are there, but take a back seat to the aforementioned aromas.

Taste - Follows the nose. Plenty of nutty pecan flavor with strong backing notes of bourbon. Vanilla and some heat. Chocolate hits mid-taste. Not getting much wheat, if any... maybe faintly in the finish; a finish rich in chocolate, roasted malt flavor and touches of anise.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied, thick and syrupy. Very low carbonation. A bit of heat, but otherwise it's smooth all things considered.

Overall - A commendable brew. Not my favorite Imperial, but I'd buy it again if the mood struck me (and if they brewed it again). Might age nicely; precisely why I bought more than just one!

Pours a pitch black with a tan head. Not much lacing or retention.

On the nose is bourbon. Lots of wheat which is different for a stout. Nutty aromas come through as well.

Tastes is very buttery and nutty. Alcohol presence is huge here. Some bourbon come in on the end to round out the taste.

Thin mouthfeel for a stout but some of it was barrel aged so it makes sense.

Would drink again but personally wouldn't seek out.

Interesting beer. I wouldn't have any idea of how to categorize it just from looking at the bottle, which reads "ALE BREWED WITH PECANS, WHEAT & RYE, WITH ONE QUARTER AGED IN BOURBON BARRELS". Nowhere does it mention that it's actually a dark beer, although it does give the alcohol at 13% ABV.

The Bourbon is obvious in both the aroma and the flavor, and I understand why only one quarter of it went into barrels - it would have been out of balance if there were any more. Rye? Yes, I think so. It lends a dryness and a spiciness, as well as a "character" (I'm not sure you can really call it a "flavor"). Of course maybe I was imagining it because, lets face it, both the dryness and the spiciness could have been coming from the alcohol, and perhaps even the hops, particularly the spiciness. The wheat? I'm not sure you can really discern any specific "wheat" flavor through the dark malts, Bourbon flavor, and alcohol. It obviously adds a bit to the head retention though, and that's most likely needed because the oils from the pecans will kill a head quite readily. So, pecans? I think yes. I didn't find them at first, but after the beer warmed a bit and it opened up I thought I found some pecan flavor.

So, finally, it's clearly a well-made beer. Points there. It looks good, it smells good, it tastes good, and it's fairly unusual and complex. Additionally, I was impressed with how well-balanced it was, especially given a solid 13% ABV. Highly recommended.

A - Thick black pour with a decent mocha foam head that retains well. Carbonation only shows in the foam. Leaves a syrupy thick coating on the glass.

S - Scents of roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, and coffee. Slightly bummed that none of the nutty notes came through but overall this was a nice aroma with plenty of subtle notes.

T - Rich flavors of cocoa powder, and toasted malt. Some notes of rye do come out in this stout which is interesting but somewhat distracted from the other flavors. Finish has flavors of black licorice and a warming burn of alcohol.

M - Thick beer that leaves a slick feel on the tongue. Finish reminds you that this is a big stout. This ended up being a bottle shred sipper; take your time and enjoy.

O - Actually one of the better collaborations Stone has done. I've had a bunch and this was a joy to try.
