Stone Reason Be Damned Aged In Red Wine Barrels on tap at the 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle, SC).

Pours a beautiful, clear dark copper with an excellent head and lacing.

Excellent wine barrel effects. Fruity/floral aroma. Great complexity and balance. Both tart and sweet. Dry finish. Tastes better than it smells until the aftertaste when too much wine barrel remains.

O: This sipper is interesting and complex

While the marriage of barrel and beer goes way back- its often assumed that wine barrels are best suited for Belgian ale which has similar wine-like character with which to link. And the rule is- red wine barrels for dark beer and white wine barrels for lighter beer. But lighter beer in red barrels? Its quite obvious that the brewers of Stone have lost their damn minds, reason be damned!

With all facetiousness aside, the ale really shows no barrel aged presence in its pour. Its astute golden-straw coloration perfectly highlights its modestly filtered haze. As its cottony and creamy head builds upon the beer it retains the session easily and trails with broken lace. As a Belgian Golden Ale- the beer simply looks the part.

Aromas work in similar fashion, but with a glimpse into its vinous counterpart. Tangy fruits of apples, oranges and lemons and grape all wrap around a quick scent of baking bread and cracker-like malt. Its balance comes in form of spicy white pepper, wine-like acidity and wood spices that tingle the nose with its near-sourness.

The tartness builds over the palate, but the ale starts off supple and sweet with citrus fructose, shortbread and a dash of powdered sugar. Quickly dissolving on the front of the mouth, the malt quickly recedes as the more acidic tang of the fruit flavors turn dry and pleasantly musty. A blend of red and white grapes give a taste of Rose wine while notions of sandalwood spice, cork and sweat round out its tannic finish.

Its medium-light body provides an arid creaminess to start. But as the carbonation carries away the sweetness, its late bubbles pang away lightly on the tongue and give a heightened sense to the ale's acidity and peppery character in its satisfyingly warm closure.

Quite daring is the feat of turning the tide- lighter beer in darker barrels, but Stone Brewing Company pulls it off with a high level of risk and reward. Its taste isn't quite Merlot-like nor is it Chardonnay. Sharing characteristics of both, its Zinfandel or Rose character is part of its curiosity.

This version was aged in red wine barrels and was part of a tap takeover at Tap + Bottle in Tucson, Ariz..

The red wine barrel aging appears to have turned the beer into a sour-like beer. Not overly so, but enough to make it unique.

If it shows up in your area, give it a try.
